Maybe you’ve heard about the new menu Burger King rolled out this week. Not surprising, the item getting the most attention is the bacon sundae, which has received reviews ranging from “now I have a tummy ache and I just want to curl up in a little ball and cry” to “it wasn't as bad as I had imagined.”
Naturally, I thought I’d give it a shot.
I should fess up to kind of paraphrasing the end of Roger Ebert's review of "The Human Centipede" in the video above, if only because I like the idea of this being "The Human Centipede" of desserts.
If you’ve ever ordered Spenard Roadhouse’s Bacon of the Month, you know that putting bacon in a desserts isn’t necessarily a new thing, even if it’s not exactly a common thing. The salted caramel qualities can work in ice cream, and the Roadhouse has rolled out some tasty combinations of the two in the past. I’m also a sucker for the chocolate-covered bacon on a stick at the Alaska State Fair.
So I might be more open to the idea than most, and I was able to convince a couple coworkers to take the plunge with me. After we ordered, our cashier Lorenzo said “we was in here thinking no one was ever going to order that.”
It’s not curl-up-in-a-ball-and-cry bad. I hoped it would hit somewhere in the not-going-to-admit-this-to-anyone guilty pleasure zone. But it didn’t. The bacon could have been crispier, so the already not so great sundae ends up with soggy, salty chunks of fat in it. So I was disappointed by it, insofar as fast food can disappoint me.
Reporter Kyle Hopkins’ take on it was a bit more to the point: “You know what would make this sundae better? No bacon.”
That said, newsroom office manager Joy Guest loved it.
