BOB HALLINEN / Anchorage Daily News: The Star Wars dancers from the Alaska Dacnc Promotions perform at the Anchorage Summer Solstice Festival in downtown on Saturday June 19, 2010.
Solstice weekend is upon us, and there is no lack of activity around town as a result. In the print edition of Play this week you’ll find a list of some of the solstice events going down between now and the summer solstice on Tuesday.
One of the events listed is the Mayor’s Marathon, the races for which we’ve mistakenly listed as starting 8 p.m. today. The first races actually get under way 8 a.m. Saturday, with the marathon and relays beginning at Bartlett High School, others beginning at West High School and the youth cup at Westchester Lagoon. We apologize for the error.
Another noteworthy event in that list is Moose’s Tooth and Bear Tooth’s annual summer solstice concert. This year’s performer is San Diego-based Slightly Stoopid. Blending reggae, ska, hip hop and acoustic rock, the band started out as Sublime protégés before eventually coming into its own. The concert starts 7 p.m. Saturday at Moose’s Tooth. Tickets are $35 (21 and older). Visit bearttooththeatre.net for more info.
On the cover this week is Indiana post-most-things indie-rockers Murder by Death. Daily News correspondent Paul Flahive wrote about the buzz around town that followed the band’s last Anchorage show way back in 2005 and how far the group has come since then. The concert is 8 p.m. Thursday at Tap Root. Tickets are $20 (21 and older). Visit centertix.net for info.
Here are the rest of this week’s sports-centric Hot Picks.

If you can’t make the track all the way to Fairbanks for the annual Midnight Sun Game, there’s some solstice baseball action happening closer to home. The Anchorage Glacier Pilots will travel north to take on the Mat-Su Miners on Tuesday, 7 p.m., Hermon Brothers Field, Palmer, $2-$4. Visit matsuminers.org for info.

Looking to get a round of golf in this week? There’s the 16th annual Bean’s Cafe Golf Tournament, which benefits the social service outreach programs at the cafe, 7 a.m. today, Anchorage Golf Course, $225 individual, $900 for teams of four (beanscafe.org). Later in the day is the Marcus in the Morning golf tournament, a fundraiser to battle diabetes, 5 p.m., today, Anchorage Golf Course, $150 individual, $600 team (272-1424). Benefiting the American Heart Association’s Go Red for Women movement, the Wacky Women tournament is open to women golfers, 1 p.m. Thursday, Moose Run Golf Course, $100 (ak-wackywomengolf.com).
