So, she had me at hello. She lost me when she raised the bounty on wolves and approved paying hunters to shoot them down and murder them from helicopters. Save a Moose, Kill a Wolf ?? I'll never trust her intelligence again. I have absolutely no confidence in that woman.
There is NOTHING that California needs to spread to Alaska, NOTHING. We are ALASKA - and we need to stay that way. If you/others move here, stop trying to change it!!! This is ALASKA, not California - if you/others think Alaska needs to learn stuff from California, you are the last person we need up here!
Excuse me here...Alaska could learn a few things from California? I think NOT. If California was so great what are you doing up here. Just what I mean about lower 48'ers coming here wanting to make Alaska just the like the mess that they left!
You ask Akgirl if she is a Californian because she did not like the way Palin handled the wolf kill and our moose. Well quess what, NOT all Alaskans are hunters and yes, we live here. Palin's aerial wolf kill was about the most stupid and inhumane thing I have ever heard. I voted for her, but I have some very serious doubts about her. I do feel that in the future her popularity is going to go downhill. She makes too many promises and then can't back them up. I am really beginning to doubt her intelligence.
It appears that one (of many) reason(s) the gov is so popular is that she doesn't appear to be one of "them" (career politicians) but one of "us." She ran a campaign partly out on an outsider's platform and isn't afraid to think on her own and fulfill promises. Why, sometimes I wonder if she's really belongs to the Republican Party! (That's a GOOD THING, BTW.)
Wouldn't it be great to see this on the national level? I wonder if part of the reason fewer people go to the polls is that they see Tweedledeedee and Tweedledeedum (flip sides of the same tired coin).
I'd like to see changes in the political system to allow for other minority parties (or non-aligned) to participate in government; however, neither party in power will allow that to happen. So we have to hope there are others like Gov. Palin who dare to be different within their own party. The electorate rallied to Ms. Palin's side when it was clear she was against the status quo. If either of the mainstream parties offered candidates like Ms. Palin, they'd be definitely on to something BIG.
I didn't vote for her either, but I sure do like what she says about the Legislature and government in general. We need to hear from more people like her.
I'm really glad that Gov. Palin is doing so well. I wanted to believe she would fulfill in doing what is correct. Imagine that not too many years ago the Republican Party continued to rally around John Lindhauer as their answer to a leader of good government. I'm glad that the "old Guard" of the Republican Party was over ruled by a more wise electorate this last time around.
As for me, she has 100 percent of my support. She's cleaning house and I know she will keep a clean house for as long as she's governor, this term and the next. It's good to have a representative of the people that isn't afraid to look at the oil companies in the eye and make 'em squirm.
The oil companies are NOT the reason we get a PFD. The oil WE as a state own, the oil leases THEY PROFIT from, and the wisdom of past leaders to wisely invest the money they paid for their leases are the reasons we have a PFD.
That being said, the oil companies are the reason we have what may be the lightest tax burden in the nation. They pay for state services here, not you and me. They pay for nearly everything the federal government doesn't. At the same time they are able to measure their Alaska profits in BILLIONS. It's a pretty sweet deal for them.
Oh, because the oil companies pump and sell our oil we should provide everything they want? That's been the whole problem with the conservative populace of this State for too long. It should be a fair playing field and not with their hands held close to their chests.
Actually, we've been too nice to the oil companies in the past in terms of oil tax laws to the point where we lost out a lot in PFDs. Even the new 2006 tax law (net profits tax) may cost us even more, but Gov. Palin has promised to watch out for loopholes and make changes to the law as needed to make it work for us, even calling for a special session in the fall to revisit the 2006 tax law. And if the oil companies had their way with the Frank Murkowski gasline idea (no taxes for a long time), we'd still be the losers.
Good argument. Of course it's predicated on the condition that we somehow deserve a PFD, even though we can't fully fund our school districts. And then there's that question of the gas line and whether it will be relevent 10-20 years from now when it starts up. I sincerely hope we make some progress toward alternative, sustainable energy sources by then. That may be too much to ask in a state so heavily dependent on oil revenue for its own survival. What happens to future generations when the oil runs out? That's really a question we should be addressing in public discourse
Dan Fagan needs to call Palin up and say he's sorry! He kept saying how the bill wasn't going to get passed, and then only 1 person in two houses voted against it.
One person. Dan, that's a loss for you, and a win for her. Give people credit when credit is due.
You have to remember that Dan has to say outrageous things to maintain his ratings. None of the talk shows ever try to solve a problem. When a caller gets close to a solution, they'll either get cut off or the host will change the subject. It's all about entertainment and not for any social improvements or solutions.
That 89 percent approval rating is interesting, especially since the poll included a combined total of 422 conservative/moderates and only 87 progressives (which may actually be illustrative of the state's political makeup), so it stands to reason that her approval rating would be high in this sample. It would also be interesting to find out if this is a probabalistic sample and what the generalizability numbers turn out to be.
I disagree with her on most issues, but she is living up to her promises and I have great respect for that.
Sarah Palin is what Alaska has needed. Her popularity is energizing Alaska and making people proud of Alaska again. When people are happy about our governor and our government, it makes for a better state. Unfortunately, it’s too bad the Anchorage Daily News editors can’t understand this. Bitter that their choice for governor, Tony Knowles, got beat by her - they never cease to criticize and snipe at her every move. Now they even have angry shrill Andrew Halcro babble-blogging to further their asinine childish agenda. Oh well, it’s the ‘Anchorage Daily News’ and definitely not the ‘Alaska Daily News’, so we shouldn’t be surprised.
i didn't vote for her, but she's earned my respect and support. And i don't agree with everything she's done, but she is clearly independent and she takes very seriously her role as steward of the people's interests. That's worth a lot in these times.
You are right. A newspaper should never, under any circumstances, question or criticize a public official. Nor should it entertain differing or opposing points of view. Especially since Gov. Palin is popular.
Gov Palin has a take "no prisoners" attitude and I applaud her for representing ALL Alaskans and not just "the chosen few" Keep up the good work Governor
i am an alaskan and GOV.palin is # one to get the alaska together. keep up the good work mrs.GOV.now i am proud to say i am an alaskan. congratulation GOV.of alaska. feona

Gov. Palin's popularity
You can't please all the people all the time. An 89 percent approval rating is as good as it gets.
If we're lucky she will someday replace Ted or Lisa. The sooner the better as far as I'm concerned.
It's refreshing to see principles over politics.

It is interesting to me that while everyone in Alaska seems to be focused on the corruption in politics and big oil, that they have missed the fact that corruption in big medicine continues to be rampant. I like Gov. Palin's political style, pro-business, let's get Alaska's economy diversified, Gov. Sarah!! Give Alaskans more economic opportunities! Alaskans have great wealth of natural resources in wind, solar, and there is so much more that we can do with the solar energy, like cannabis/hemp farming in the Valley and elsewhere like Bush, Alaska. In addition to wind, solar, hemp farming, cannabis farming, there are other opportunities like casino gambling in Eklutna, Inc., and why not a summer lotto?

let's see here....
two moose standing side by side.
one is 45 the other is 65.
if you shoot the 45, you're some sort of great "subsistence" hunter and the anti's think that you're they're hero.
if you shoot the 65, why you're a " damned trophy hunter" and people go nuts.
even though both moose get eaten by their families.
yeah, that makes sense. i'll make sure to shoot the smaller moose just to appease your "sensitivity"

Politicians & Popularity

John Lindhauer??????Who
I'm really glad that Gov.

She's a winner
As for me, she has 100 percent of my support. She's cleaning house and I know she will keep a clean house for as long as she's governor, this term and the next. It's good to have a representative of the people that isn't afraid to look at the oil companies in the eye and make 'em squirm.

be careful whom you blame...
be careful whom you blame... those oil companies are the reason you get a PFD, and we know what happens when we try to take that away from Alaskans
| flag this »June 11, 2007 - 1:04pm | mikegalaska
Ummm, no
The oil companies are NOT the reason we get a PFD.
It's a pretty sweet deal for them.

careful with blame?????
Oh, because the oil companies pump and sell our oil we should provide everything they want? That's been the whole problem with the conservative populace of this State for too long. It should be a fair playing field and not with their hands held close to their chests.

We're becoming winners
Actually, we've been too nice to the oil companies in the past in terms of oil tax laws to the point where we lost out a lot in PFDs. Even the new 2006 tax law (net profits tax) may cost us even more, but Gov. Palin has promised to watch out for loopholes and make changes to the law as needed to make it work for us, even calling for a special session in the fall to revisit the 2006 tax law. And if the oil companies had their way with the Frank Murkowski gasline idea (no taxes for a long time), we'd still be the losers.

Good argument. Of course

I think
Dan Fagan needs to call Palin up and say he's sorry! He kept saying how the bill wasn't going to get passed, and then only 1 person in two houses voted against it.
One person. Dan, that's a loss for you, and a win for her. Give people credit when credit is due.

Dan Fagen
You have to remember that Dan has to say outrageous things to maintain his ratings. None of the talk shows ever try to solve a problem. When a caller gets close to a solution, they'll either get cut off or the host will change the subject. It's all about entertainment and not for any social improvements or solutions.

That 89 percent approval
That 89 percent approval rating is interesting, especially since the poll included a combined total of 422 conservative/moderates and only 87 progressives (which may actually be illustrative of the state's political makeup), so it stands to reason that her approval rating would be high in this sample. It would also be interesting to find out if this is a probabalistic sample and what the generalizability numbers turn out to be.
I disagree with her on most issues, but she is living up to her promises and I have great respect for that.

Sarah Palin is what Alaska needed

She's earned it
i didn't vote for her, but she's earned my respect and support. And i don't agree with everything she's done, but she is clearly independent and she takes very seriously her role as steward of the people's interests. That's worth a lot in these times.
Why does this have to be about the Daily News?

A free press is for liberal sissies
You are right. A newspaper should never, under any circumstances, question or criticize a public official. Nor should it entertain differing or opposing points of view. Especially since Gov. Palin is popular.
