Tonight at Bernie's Bungalow Lounge (626 D Street) Lonesome Cowboy Bill will be performing their last show in Alaska. Dan Jaeggi (bass and vocals) is California dreaming and will be heading to some warmer weather and family’s embrace. Fellow band members Scott Fitzpatrick (guitar) and Erika Ninoyu (drums) will remain in Anchorage – and hopefully start up another endeavor. Usually Fitzpatrick can be heard playing classical guitar at Organic Oasis, Wednesdays at 7 p.m.

What it is made of

Tooth Fairy Courtesy of Ted KincaidTooth Fairy Courtesy of Ted Kincaid

Cut down it down to what it is made of and in a pile there is:
Large pieces of cardboard
Lots of white paint
Other colors of paint - but only a tiny bit of green.
Brushes
Some scrap paper
Pen and ink

What all that turns into – well, as Ted Kincaid puts it:

“An a-political look at religion and more importantly the elements people turn into spiritual icons - and then a few that I look for as well. Each topic is an over-sized illustration in a crude children's style focusing more on content and portrayal glorified through the eyes of a common person.”

First Tap’s Inside Voice

Posted by play_blog

Posted: July 28, 2009 - 3:56 pm

The August First Tap with Albino and the Whipsaws is relocating. The Moose’s Tooth’s open-air, rain-or-shine concerts are apparently not appealing to the neighbors.
“Due to municipal permitting difficulties and neighborhood noise concerns, the concert will be moved inside to the Bear Tooth Theatrepub (1230 W. 27th Ave.),” a recent press release states.
The change in venue has also resulted in a change of time: The Whipsaws will now be performing 9 to 10:45 p.m. and Albino from 11 p.m. to 12:45 a.m.
All tickets purchased for the Moose's Tooth show are still valid; tickets for the newly scheduled show are available at the Bear Tooth box office and online.

Northway Dining Notes

Posted by play_blog

Posted: July 23, 2009 - 2:22 pm

Fans of Dossman’s Cajun Kitchen will be happy to know the diner has a new location in the Northway Mall. Owner Adrian Dossman said business has been brisk in the three months since the eatery opened up in the location that previously housed an Orange Julius and a burger spot called Fox’s.

The mall locale is the fourth incarnation of Dossman's. The first two restaurants were in Mountain View, but the last one closed in 2000. That was followed by a roadside stand on the corner DeBarr Road and Boniface Parkway than ran from about 2003 to 2006. The only way to get their Creole and Cajun food the past couple of years was through a catering business.

In September the Greek Corner is going to have a new address. The owners of the comfortable blue and white restaurant hope the new location, on the corner of Barrow Street and Northern Lights Boulevard, will offer plenty of stress-free parking and enough interior room to allow patrons to stretch out. While some regular customers may worry that the restaurant’s cozy feel will be lost with the relocation to a larger space, Vespa Herrick, manager for 21 years, said recreating the warm atmosphere is a priority.

Chef Patrick Hoogerhyde, previously of Orso and currently of the soon-to-open Wild Fin Sea Grill, brought home a third-place finish in the Great American Seafood Cook-Off.

It's the best finish for Alaska in the six year history of the event.

Hoogerhyde's menu included troll-caught king salmon, Alaskan Brewing Co.'s Smoked Porter, an Alaska-produced birch syrup, vegetables from the Valley, lowbush cranberries and Alaska-cultivated oyster mushrooms.

The New York Press had a story today about The Builders and the Butchers, a crew of Portland musicians who originally hail from Anchorage.

Ryan Sollee, the former singer of the Born Losers (here’s a review I wrote in 2005), was a driving force in the creation of the group.

The NY Press Story talks about their days playing music on the street and their Americana sound.

Below is a video for their recent single “Golden & Green.”
