...I have never fished the Kenai for reds when it opens 12:01am, so wondering what is the cost of the ferry, if any. Plus, taking the ferry will get me to the hot spots, right? Is there anything I need to know about it? Rod and reel is okay too, I am assuming. Don't have a fly pole. Please, let me know.
Thanks
The ferry at the Russian operates from 6am to 11pm during the season (daylight hours only, per USCG). There are a few places to fish on the highway side of the river, but the premium spots are on the other side. You should be fine with a spinning set up or fly rod, and I've even seen some folks use baitcasting rigs. There is some good information worth checking out at the following site:
Ok folks...where are the hot spots for today through Sunday for reds? If I'm reading the forecast correctly it sounds like Soldotna...Bings? or Big Eddy? PLEASE...some guidance here, ok? What about Deep Creek and the Ninilchik River in Ninilchik. Hot pink floss?
All those fish in the Russian have to come up the Kenai, so yes, the fish are there. That's the good news. The bad news is that good fishing holes draw crowds. Still, you should be able to find places that aren't as bad as the Russian.
Lots of fresh kings in the lower river since Friday. Most under the slot, but lots of nice 40-45 inch bright fish. Friday some guides were claiming 14-15 fish per boat. Saturday slow before low tide, lots of boats, pretty slow until a couple hours before low, then a new wave of fish. We kept one 40 inch hen on a plug. Lots of reds blasting through too if you want a break from the kings.
Buddy of mine just got back from the lower river and reported things are still slow. He caught one jack and said it was the only one he saw caught. Anyone else having any luck yet?
Went late morning on the 27th for about 4 hours. No luck for anyone around us. Wind picked up and was a little on the chilly side. River is down low so be careful or you'll be looking for a new prop.

Second run of kings warming up?
Fish and game puts the king count over the last two days at nearly 3,000 -- best two days of the month...
