GOD BLESS, MY DEAR FRIEND

To Thomas, the boys, family and friends, know that you are all in my thoughts are prayers. Carletta and I were served in the same squad at Fort Lewis and I will tell you that I have never been prouder to have served with a great soldier medic like her. I am also in Baghdad and heard about thuis unfortunate incident shortly after it happened, since then I have not been able to get that contagious smile out of my mind.

I will never forget all the times we spent together, the lunches, shopping and bowling, you are a true friend.

Peace and God Speed my dear friend, you will never be forgotten, and will always hold a special place in my heart. Rest in Peace

We all love you, Carletta

As I sat down to check my email yesterday, I opened up a letter from an old friend who I had been stationed with in the 54th Air Ambulance Company at Fort Lewis, Washington. The email told me that our dear friend and fellow flight medic SSG Carletta Davis had been killed in an IED blast on her third tour in Iraq. I was instantly overcome with grief and emotion. How can this be?? It's impossible!! Carletta and I had been on the same team during her second deployment...living side-by-side for the year, the only two female soldiers with our unit element located in Ad Diwaniyah, Iraq.

Carletta was a brave, strong, and caring person. She accomplished every mission ever set before her with a passion rarely seen nowadays. She put her whole heart into everything she did. She had a laugh that came from her heart and soul, and a smile that was infectious!! No matter how bad you may have felt, she always had good things to say to help you make it through one more day. She loved her job, she lived to help people - so to say that she did not "belong" there, I don't know...she was extremely dedicated to the cause, and whatever she felt that may have been was imbedded in her heart and soul. She was extremely dedicated to her boys and her family. She couldn't wait to see them, and they were always on her mind - she always had their pictures with her, even when she was flying missions. My heart and prayers go out to you all. I really cannot accurately express in words how much devotion and care Carletta placed into to every aspect of her life, or how much she impacted my life on so many levels.

Carletta, you will be truly and dearly missed - we all love you so much. Rest in peace, my brave sister soldier.

Carletta Smith Davis

To a friend from years long past, how can I express with mere words the loss I feel at this moment?

I see your picture and smile. Memories flood to my mind – ice skating during recess at Airport Heights; slumber parties with the girls; roaming the halls during lunch at East; and hanging out at 5th Avenue Mall before work. With every memory I hear your laugh – the kind of laugh that shook your whole body. And I then I see your beaming simile, a smile that you readily gave to everyone you encountered.

And then I cry…

I cry out – Why? No? This can not be! Sorrow and anger fill my head. I see-saw between emotions – the pleasantness of reliving good memories that have long been pushed to the corners of my mind, only to come crashing to the ground when the harsh reality hits me that you are no longer here.

And then I cry…

I cry out to God – Why did this have to happen to her?
I cry out to our government - Why did she have to be there and ultimately lose her life?
I cry out that this can not continue! No other mother, father, sister, brother, son, daughter, aunt, uncle, cousin, friend should lose anyone else to this madness.

And then I just cry…

To your husband and sons: I hope that they can find strength and remember your kind and giving spirit, your beautiful smile, and infectious laugh.

To your mother: No words can express how deeply sorry I am that she is no longer here with you. As I write this the tears flow and all I can do is cry.

Good night my warrior sister, sweet dreams forever.

Rest in peace.

The sign on Fireweed says it all ...

FREEDOM IS NOT FREE. I am just so grateful our Nation and Alaska have such an incredible calibre of men and women who are willing to go away and fight these vicious Islamo-Terrorists over there, before we have to face them over here ... AGAIN.

Brothers-in-Arms understand Medics are nothing but HEROS to the units they're assigned to, and Staff Sgt. Carletta Davis was an accomplished and sterling example.

My heart grieves for her family, along with her 3 beautiful boys and a husband I know she loved deeply. She was obviously a loving & caring person and would have made an incredible P.A. She was, and continues to be an inspiration to all who knew and worked for her I'm sure, but also to the many who didn't get that chance, but have read her story.

My heart and prayers go out to her entire family and her friends ... may God comfort them all in thier time of great loss.

Staff Sgt. Carletta Davis beautiful smile, and Spirit will be missed in our community, but never forgotten.

Perhaps a mother of three

Perhaps a mother of three doesn't belong in combat. But that was her choice to make. She chose to be a soldier and a medic. She wasn't shanghaid or drafted or hoodwinked or conned. She chose a career of meaningful service to her country. She chose to fight and serve with her fellow soldiers. Let her be honored for her commitment and her service, not belittled for it.

Thank you ...

for your reasoned and tempered response to a comment which I also found 'Agenda-driven', disrespectful and yes, belittling to the memory of such an obviously outstanding Citizen, Soldier, and Mom. Her boys were BLESSED to have had such a Mother, even if for a tragically shortened life.

Most of us Americans are inspired by her commitment and humbled by her sacrifice.
