Fall is here. Termination dust blankets nearby peaks. Ladies are breaking out the UGGs. But local headbangers are still sporting tanktops. What gives? Hard rock fans are about to celebrate summer eternal with the release of "AK Soul’s Summer Meltdown CD. Vol. 1."
This live CD captures the highlights of one of the Anchorage's rockingest summer days: Summer Meltdown 2005. The all-day rock festival, held July 23 in the parking lot at the Cellular One Sports Center, featured 10 bands (though headliner and signed act 36 Crazy Fists couldn't be included on the CD due to legal reasons). The day was epic, the rock was loud and the weather was … well, it didn’t rain.
The boys at AK Soul - Kurt Bunde and Chad Aurentz - say the 13-song CD captures the sound and energy of the day.
"It sounds really good. We even got the crowd noise in there," said Aurentz from a cell phone while vacationing in San Diego. "I think it will also feed the excitement so we can do (the Summer Meltdown) again."
Decide for yourself Thursday, when the CD officially enters the world at its release party.
The gig is set for 9 p.m. Thursday night at Chilkoot Charlie’s. Of course, there will be live music: Expect Dead on Fourth and Dekcuf to perform, as well as a handful of special guest appearances from local acts. There is the usual cover at the door, but no additional charge to attend the show. CDs will cost $10 (though Bunde said CDs may not be ready in time for the gig).
If you can’t make the show, CDs will be available at Mammoth Music’s Dimond Center location.
