Middle school students from around Alaska are getting first-hand experience in marine environmental science as part of a youth expedition with Chugach Children's Forest and Alaska Geographic.
Eight students from Anchorage, Whittier, Valdez, Cordova and Homer traveled to forests and fish hatcheries on the research vessel Babkin to learn about the effect of marine debris and lingering oil on the sensitive habitats of Prince William Sound.
Now in its fifth year, the eight-day excursion helps students hone their outdoor skills and work as a team with peers from different rural and urban communities.
The PWS Youth Expedition is one of four youth-oriented programs put on by Alaska Geographic during the summer.
