Community Bulletins

The Alaska Bulletin Board is a place for announcements and items of interest to the community that reach the Daily News but that may or may not become news stories prepared by our journalists. The content usually originates with press releases from government agencies or non-profit organizations. The Bulletin Board is not intended to be a comprehensive calendar or a news report, but rather useful information our editors consider to be of sufficiently broad and immediate interest to publish here.

Care package drive launched for deployed Alaska Guard members

Press release from the office of Sen. Bill Wielechowski

Supplies needed include q-tips, bug spray, popcorn, magazines and letters of support

ANCHORAGE -- Senator Bill Wielechowski (D-East Anchorage) kicked off a care package drive this week for members of the Alaska Air National Guard currently serving in Afghanistan. Businesses or community members who would like to donate items or money can call (907) 269-0120 to participate. All donations are welcome; the deployed men and women particularly need q-tips, bug spray, suntan lotion, beef jerky, salmon jerky, magazines, popcorn and other small items.

Four businesses are already pitching in. Senator Wielechowski says he hopes this will become a statewide effort to show appreciation for Alaskans serving abroad.

“I would like to thank Alaska Magazine, Starbucks, Walgreens, and Fish and Hunt Alaska Magazine for their generous donations for these care packages,” said Senator Wielechowski. “They’ve gone the extra mile to show their support for these Alaskans who are defending our freedom and keeping us safe. I hope more businesses will participate in this effort to show our appreciation.”

Senator Wielechowski is also encouraging the public to write letters of appreciation to these Guard members, who are required to leave their families for long periods of time and serve in often dangerous situations.

Senator Wielechowski’s office will also forward notes and letters of appreciation to our deployed men and women. Anyone who would like to send one can mail it to:

Supporters can also e-mail Senator_Bill_Wielechowski@legis.state.ak.us. All messages so received will be printed and included with the written letters when they are sent with the care packages later this month.
