Ruth Qutan Goodwin
The late Ruth Qutaq Goodwin, Goodwin, Iñupiaq Language Commissioner and Iñupiaq language bilingual teacher, will be honored at a conference in Kotzebue, June 12-15. The Aqqaluk Trust and the Iñupiaq Language Commission will facilitate an Iñupiaq Language and Culture Conference.
A press release from the trust says: "Guest speakers, panelists, workshops, dance groups, and good food will bring people together to learn, network & become energized. The conference agenda will focus on language programs, the teaching of cultural skills, sharing dances and stories, and creating language revitalization strategies to work with schools, communities, Elders, youth and various organizations.
"The conference will itself will include Eskimo dancing, Iñupiaq workshops, evening gospel song singspiration, Rosetta Stone product demonstration, atiqluk making, ulu making and much, much more. A group of Maori from New Zealand, will be special guests for the conference and will be enlightening the attendees with their own special presentations.
"This conference will be dedicated to the past and present-day Iñupiaq language bilingual teachers and in the memory of Goodwin, the daughter of the late Robert Aqqaluk Newlin, Sr."
