Let's get caught up -- there's a bunch of playoffs going on, ya know.
In the AHL, former Alaska Aces bench boss and captain Keith McCambridge, now rookie bench boss of the St. John's IceCaps, has his club in the Eastern Conference Finals, which open Thursday at Norfolk. St. John's on Saturday beat Wilkes-Barre/Scranton 2-1 in Game 7 of that series to advance. Former UAA winger Kevin Clark is on the IceCaps -- he's played two games, no points, even rating, in these playoffs.
In the USHL, Waterloo goaltender Stephon Williams on Saturday night stopped 37 shots to backstop a 2-1 win at Green Bay in Game 1 of the best-of-5 Clark Cup Finals. Game 2 is tonight. Williams in the playoffs is 9-2 with a 2.10 goals-against average and .930 save percentage. He has won three straight games and surrendered just three goals in that stretch.
In the WHL, tonight brings Game 7 of the Finals for the Portland Winterhawks, who include defenseman William Wrenn of Anchorage and defenseman Josh Hanson of Eagle River. Game 7 is at Edmonton -- winner advances to the Memorial Cup. In 21 playoff games, Wrenn is 0-4--4 and +4, and Hanson is 0-0--0 and +4.
At the World Championships, Team USA, which includes forwards Nate Thompson and Joey Crabb of Anchorage, beat Finland 5-0 today in Helsinki and lock a berth in the quarterfinals no matter how it does in Tuesday's pool-play finale against Switzerland. The U.S. is 5-1. In six games, Thompson, one of the team's alternate captains, is 2-0--2 and +2. Crabb in six games is 0-2--2 and +1.
And don't forget, the ECHL's Kelly Cup Finals open Monday, when the Florida Everblades play Game 1 at the Las Vegas Wranglers.
