Various reports out of Montreal say the Canadiens next month will buy out the remaining two years of center Scott Gomez of Anchorage's mega-contract.
Gomez still has two years and $10 million left on a 7-year, $51.5 million deal he signed with the New York Rangers. The way capgeek.com figures it, the buyout would bring Gomez $6.67 million.
Maybe a buyout would be for the best if Gomez was able to make a new start somewhere else. He's had two poor seasons in Montreal, the last one an injury-plagued campaign of just 38 games, with only 2-9--11 and -9 totals for the two-time Stanley Cup winner, former Rookie of the Year and most accomplished player in Alaska history.
The Montreal Gazette reported this text message from Gomez: “As I’ve said before, that’s a management decision. I only worry about what I can control and I’m already in the gym getting ready for next season. That’s my only focus. I’ll let the media focus on rumours and debate what (the Canadiens) should or shouldn’t do.”
