Community Bulletins

The Alaska Bulletin Board is a place for announcements and items of interest to the community that reach the Daily News but that may or may not become news stories prepared by our journalists. The content usually originates with press releases from government agencies or non-profit organizations. The Bulletin Board is not intended to be a comprehensive calendar or a news report, but rather useful information our editors consider to be of sufficiently broad and immediate interest to publish here.

STAR hosting basic self-defense course

From Standing Together Against Rape:

Senshido Self-Defense Course

Are you worried that you couldn't defend yourself if you needed to? Maybe you think you are too short, too little, too round, too thin, too slow, too old? Think again. REACT (Shredding) is a self-defense strategy that can be used by anyone, regardless of age, gender, size or athletic ability. According to Senshido Alaska, "the advantage of REACT (Shredding) is that it is a concept and tool that can be used by one and all. It is 'user friendly' and requires no memorization of techniques, no repetitive training, and no need for high levels of athleticism”.

Standing Together Against Rape is hosting a self-defense course for teens and adults on April 24th, from 6-8pm. Cost is $10 but no one will be turned away for inability to pay. The course will be held in the conference room at 1057 West Fireweed Lane, Anchorage. Please call Keeley at STAR (276-7279) if you plan to attend, so a head count can be maintained. The course is capped at 25 participants.

Anyone over the age of thirteen is welcome to attend this course.
