Community Bulletins

The Alaska Bulletin Board is a place for announcements and items of interest to the community that reach the Daily News but that may or may not become news stories prepared by our journalists. The content usually originates with press releases from government agencies or non-profit organizations. The Bulletin Board is not intended to be a comprehensive calendar or a news report, but rather useful information our editors consider to be of sufficiently broad and immediate interest to publish here.

Anchorage students earn national merit scholarships

From the Anchorage School District:

ASD students earn National Merit Scholarships
Additional winners to be named in coming months

Three ASD high school seniors were named winners of the 2012 National Merit Scholarship program. The students are:
· Andrea Isby of South High School
· Anny Ning of West High School
· Lauren Summers of Dimond High School

This first round announcement of winners includes students who earned corporate-sponsored awards. All three awards were sponsored by BP Foundation.
National Merit Scholars are evaluated on their academic records, test scores, leadership in school and community activities, essays, and letters of recommendation from their schools. Scholarship winners are judged to have the strongest combination of accomplishments, skills and potential for success in rigorous college studies.
The number of scholar winners named in each state is based on the state’s percentage of the national total of graduating high school seniors. These three Merit Scholar designees were among 1,000 winners chosen from about 8,300 finalists in the 2012 program.
