Dog Blog

The Dog Blog is a community of ordinary dog lovers who have come together to discuss our extraordinary dogs. Each Monday, a new topic is introduced. If you've got an opinion, share it. If not, look for the current "anything goes" topic and introduce a discussion of your own. On Fridays, weigh in about your training questions and successes.
Your host: Mike Lewis is a little-dog nerd and the proud owner of Eddie and Jillian, a pair of Yorkies who think they're huskies, and Lucy, a sweet Chessie. R.I.P., Rusty. Contact mlewis@adn.com

Anything goes: Talk amongst yourselves ;)

Use this space to discuss anything you'd like.

I'm on furlough the rest of the week and will be out of commission until Monday, April 22.

Feel free to keep the conversation going here, and I'll be checking in in a week.

My pack is doing pretty well. Lucy is feeling a bit more independent minded on unleashed walks than I'd like. As she's gotten more comfortable living with me, she's pushing her limits more and more. She found a stray chicken bone at the park last night and gnawed it down despite several attempts to call her off. She was standing in deep snow, and I couldn't get to the spot fast enough. I may have to switch her to a flexi or long lead to get her back on track.

Jillie's nosework training is going so-so. She loves the game of finding a treat in a box, but I may have rushed her into pairing the treat with the odor. She hasn't made the connection, because when I work with Eddie on odor alone, she shows no interest. We'll see how it goes.

Nosework is a godsend for Eddie. Like Lucy, he has a tendency to push his limits on unleashed walks, especially now that the odors are coming out. But when I hide the odor for him during the walk, his attention stays right on me. I love it.

Have a great week, everybody, and if you're in town and have time, check out the details of the post I made on Scoop the Poop Day. It's next Saturday -- and the trails need our help.
