With reigning ECHL Goaltender of the Year Gerald Coleman out for the series with an upper-body injury and Adam Courchaine set to make three straight starts against the Colorado Eagles, the Alaska Aces have secured a temporary back-up for Courchaine.
The Aces have added former Colorado College goaltender Drew O'Connell of Anchorage. Assume he'll simply be on the bench working the gate -- well, that, and giving the Aces' skaters some work during game-day skates and also warmups before games. (Early Happy Birthday to Drew, who turns 25 on New Year's Day).
The Aces, tops in the league, and the Eagles, who own the second-best winning percentage on the circuit, play tonight and Friday and Saturday nights.
Colorado is actually third in points with 39 -- the Aces have 45 -- and that leaves it one point behind Las Vegas, which has played two more games than the Eagles after Tuesday night's 5-2 win over visiting Stockton in an annual midnight game the Wranglers hold. By the way, in that game, former Aces winger (very briefly, back in the day) Adam Huxley racked a Gordie Howe hat trick with a goal (granted, into an empty net), assist and fight. Also, Las Vegas' Eric Lampe scored yet another goal to push his league-leading total to 24 in 28 games -- that gives him a six-goal cushion over Greenville's Brendan Connolly, who has bagged 18 goals in 24 games.
