Paced by stingy freshman goalkeeper Jared Wilson of Anchorage, the Peninsula College men's soccer team on Sunday won the championship of the Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges.
After a scoreless regulation and overtimes -- 110 minutes without a goal -- Peninsula won 5-4 over Highline on penalty kicks in Tukwila, Wash., when Wilson, the tournament MVP, stopped Highline's fifth shooter.
The shutout was Wilson's seventh of the season. He made six saves before the match went to a shootout. Wilson, who played at East High, also delivered a shutout in a 1-0 semifinal win over Columbia Basin.
Wilson is one of seven Alaskans on the Thunderbirds, based in Port Angeles, Wash.
Tyler Hindmarch (Chugiak) scored five goals this season, Patrick Wolverton (Dimond) scored four and Lucas Costa (Dimond) scored three. Other Alaskans on the team are Michael Carbon (Service), Jeff Mullen (Soldotna) and Parker Vacura (Tri-Valley).
