Dog Blog

The Dog Blog is a community of ordinary dog lovers who have come together to discuss our extraordinary dogs. Each Monday, a new topic is introduced. If you've got an opinion, share it. If not, look for the current "anything goes" topic and introduce a discussion of your own. On Fridays, weigh in about your training questions and successes.

Friday training talk: What's new with your pack?

Use this space to discuss training issues -- brag about successes, seek advice or help someone else with an issue you're familiar with.

My dogs think it's spring. We took a longer-than-usual morning walk, ran into some friendly neighborhood dogs at the park and played a little longer, then came home for what is usually a quiet time. No way. Jillie was harassing Eddie, so she went in the x-pen with some toys. Eddie was bored stiff and following me around wanting to play. Even Rusty wanted in and out of the house more often.

As for training, I'm real excited about the nose work. Eddie is successfully using his nose to find the box with the treat in it every time, and he loves playing the game. Usually, he sniffs all the boxes and then turns around the one with the treat. But he embarrassed me last night when I tried to show him off to co-workers. He turned each and every box around and investigated before finding the treat visually. I'm not sure why. Perhaps it was as simple as being distracted by the audience and thinking the rules of the game changed.
