Lots of readers wrote in with their favorite Alaska-friendly apps for iPhones, here are some highlights (app names in bold):

"For a star map, try pUniverse . Works well, geek approved. Cornell makes a birdsong identifier, but it's pricey."
"Try Yelp for local businesses and restaurants."
"There's Alaska HDTV as an iphone app, and the newest version of the Mused app is going to have several Alaska Museums listed as well."
"There is already a great planet app ('Planets')out there that shows your position and where the planets and stars are in relation to you. It is a great app and it is free. It has many layers that you cam choose from as in 2D, 3D, globe, etc."
"AyeTides is a fabulous app that gives me tide and current information all over Alaska coastline AND the world in one sweet little app that doesn’t require connectivity to operate."
"Phases gives me moon and sun info for any location I request, including Juneau. And can automatically use my current location to give me info throughout the globe."
"A free Colorado app that is pretty interesting and could use an Alaska tie is BAC Calc, Blood Alcohol Calculation, developed for Colorado Department of Transportation. Shows BAC levels for men/women by weight and time since consumption and has a feature using GPS to call a cab company with a touch of the screen, based on your location."
"iBird Pro is a fairly expensive paid app (think about $20, maybe more, but a bargain for what I got) that includes all birds of North America, calls, songs, video, id, range maps, …. Way cool and lighter than carrying field guides, etc. There is a free introductory iBird app as well."
"A free global app that has yet to get any Anchorage users (I’m the only Alaskan that seems to be posting) is flook. Post favorite restaurants, places, interesting things you see with digital “cards”. When traveling you can search for “cards near me” and find some great information if folks have been entering cards for your region. Getting to be good coverage for San Francisco area, London area (flook is based out of these two cities). "
"One great app (okay, the best (or most important to me, in any case))is the ereader app, that allows one to download Books. Most any, most all, books from near, far, old, and new; for hours and hours of the pleasure of reading. Winter. Summer. Wonderful. Little bit 'o price. Great pleasure. The only thing that's lacking is the ability to swap books, but I hear there's an app coming out for that."
