UAF Moves Up The National Rankings/Pairwise Rankings (Taranto, Enders Earn CCHA Honors)

Coming off a Governor's Cup sweep to take the hardware from UAA, UAF moved up both national polls today and also moved up the PairWise Rankings, which mimic the field for the NCAA tournament.

UAF (16-9-9), which beat UAA 7-4 and 3-2, moved up to No. 13 (after previously being unranked) in the USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine Top 15. The Nanooks jumped to No. 14, from No. 17, in the USCHO.com Poll.

And the Nanooks, who entertain Western Michigan in a best-of-3, first-round CCHA playoff series beginning Friday, have leaped up to a tie for eighth in the PairWise.

UAF freshman winger Andy Taranto was named the CCHA's Rookie of the Week after bagging three goals and two helpers against UAA -- he had a hat trick in the 7-4 win in Anchorage. And UAF blueliner Scott Enders was named the league's Defenseman of the Week for his three assists and +3 rating in the Cup series.

Western Michigan (8-18-8) finished last in the 12-team CCHA to UAF's fifth. Still, Western beat (3-1 with an empty netter) and tied (4-4 thanks to an extra-attacker goal by UAF's Joe Sova with 14 seconds left in regulation) visiting UAF in early December, when the teams met for the only time this season.

Western lacks a 10-goal scorer or a 20-point producer, but has a senior goaltender, Riley Gill, capable of stealing games. He furnishes a .925 save percentage and stopped 65 of 70 UAF shots in that December series.
