Bethel cold-case murder solved, troopers say

A Bethel man has been charged with murder in the death of a woman whose body was found more than three years ago, according to Alaska State Troopers.

Carl Fox Jr., 51, was arrested Thursday on a warrant charging him with second-degree murder in the death of 40-year-old Agnes Evan, who was found dead in brush on Dec. 5, 2006.

Police in Bethel initially said Evan appeared to have died of hypothermia, but an autopsy later determined her death was caused by blunt-force trauma to the abdomen.

Evan’s death was one of two that hit the short-staffed Bethel Police Department in December that year, prompting an outcry for assistance as months passed and the cases remained unsolved.

Troopers eventually took over the investigation, and began it anew, troopers spokeswoman Megan Peters said. Investigators got a warrant for Fox’s arrest on Thursday.

Details on how Fox is alleged to have killed Evan were not immediately available.

Fox, who has a long history of arrests for alcohol, drug and assault offenses, was booked into jail at Yukon-Kuskokwim Correctional Center in Bethel with bail set at $100,000.
