Man accused of killing father charged with murder

A Kongiganak man who shot and killed his father this week has been jailed on a charge of murder, according to Alaska State Troopers.

Gary E. David, 30, was charged with first-degree murder following his father’s death Tuesday night, troopers said.

The Village Public Safety Officer in Kongiganak called troopers about 11:45 p.m. Tuesday to report David was in his home and fired a gun, troopers said. The officer went inside and found Kenneth David, 64, dead.

Troopers say the younger David fatally shot his father in the chest with a rifle, which he was still holding.

The officer talked David into putting the weapon down and surrendering. David put the rifle down but struggled with the officer briefly before being arrested, troopers said.

It was not clear why David allegedly killed his father. Troopers said there was no indication of an argument or altercation before the shooting. Alcohol was not a factor.

David was taken to Bethel, where he was booked into Yukon-Kuskokwim Correctional Center, troopers said.

Kenneth David’s body was sent to Anchorage for an autopsy.

Kongiganak is on the west shore of Kuskokwim Bay, about 70 miles southwest of Bethel.
