Bear viewing in Alaska

Q: Hey Bob! We are flying up from West Virginia for 10 days in late July. We want to do a fly-in tour that lands and allows us time to view bears. Which area of your state would you suggest we fly into to increase our chances of some great bear pictures? Any tips for booking a safe, reliable, reasonably priced air service? —Kathy

A: In the past, I would have recommended you go to Homer, about a five-hour drive from Anchorage, and book a bear viewing tour from there. Those had always been my favorite bear-viewing destinations, but I've heard recently that way too many planes are doing that from Homer. One of the top operators down there, in fact, quit the business because they felt they could no longer offer their guests the kind of undisturbed experience they felt good about

So, I would instead go from Anchorage with Rust's Flying Service . Depending on the exact week, they can take you to either Brooks Falls or other locations. You won't be alone at these bear viewing locations, but the locations are well managed and safe. Rust's is probably the best known and most reputable air taxi in Alaska, and I recommend them. As for price, everyone charges roughly the same amount. Rust’s bear-viewing trips range from $595 to $795. It's not cheap, but it's absolutely a highlight of an Alaska vacation. Try to book an all-day tour rather than a half-day—you'll have more time on the ground.
