They played a beauty tonight in Stockton, where Victoria went through 16 shootout rounds to secure a 1-0 win over the Thunder before an announced crowd of 9,158 at Stockton Arena.
Andy Brandt's goal in the 16th round gave the Salmon Kings a 2-1 edge in the shootout.
Victoria's Glenn Fisher stopped 31 shots in regulation and overtime, and 15 of 16 shooters in the shootout. He stopped former Aces Colin Hemingway and Matt Robinson twice each. Bryan Pitton made 34 saves in regulation and overtime, and stopped 14 of 16 shooters in the shootout -- take about a hard-luck loser. Still, among his stops in the shootout were two on Victoria sniper Wes Goldie, two on Eric Walsky of Anchorage and one on former Aces center Olivier Filion.
Other than Brandt's shootout goal, the only other scores came in the third round of the skills competition that is designed to go five rounds -- Victoria's Olivier Latendresse and Stockton's Anthony Aiello.
The 16 rounds did not set an ECHL record. Birmingham won a 21-round shootout against visiting Hampton Roads in 1992 to secure a 7-6 win. And Fresno won a 20-round shootout -- the game winner was scored by former UAA and current South Carolina forward Spencer Carbery -- to earn a 3-2 win over Phoenix in 2008.
