Strong bodies: fitness & health

This blog will cover all city and statewide bodybuilding competitions and the out-of-state guest posers. Weight-loss success stories from local people, features/bios on bodybuilding, fitness and figure competitors, coverage of fad diets. Nutritious recipes and reviews on local gyms and health food stores. I would also like to cover Adult/Childhood Obesity in America and specifically,Alaska. Weight-lifting techniques/safety as well as the benefits for women. This is just a general idea, as the blog will be constantly evolving.

Stephanie Figarelle

I competed in my first bodybuilding competition as a senior at East High in 2000 and after winning the overall title, bodybuilding and fitness became my passion. I've been a NASM certified personal trainer since 2004 and I love helping people achieve their goals with fitness and proper nutrition. My overall bodybuilding titles include: Ms. Anchorage 2006 and The Anchorage Crystal Cup 2007. I have lived in Anchorage since 1988.

Nutrition Faux Pas

The weird things people do when trying to get healthy never seize to amaze me. Here are just a few:

Dumping a cup of fatty ranch dressing on your salad and calling it a "healthy dinner":
- This is an all too common mistake when people think that just because they are eating vegetables, it's alright to smother them to death in fatty dressings.

'Fasting' to lose weight:
- Fasting can be a healthy short-term way to cleanse the body, but is by no means a healthy way to lose body fat. It's unrealistic and can be dangerous if you don't properly plan it out.

Drinking fruit juice instead of eating real fruit:
- No, V8 and orange juice are not viable alternatives to fresh fruit. In fact, juice contains a lot of unnecessary calories, sugar and sodium. Stick with the fresh stuff, it's also higher in fiber.

Eating 'Fat Free' foods that are sky high in sugar:
- I love when you read a label that says fat free, like it's an open invitation to binge out on the product (usually candy or some other junk). Fat free does not mean you can go crazy and eat as much as you want. Always check how many calories and grams of sugar are in a food item before you indulge.

Eating too many carbs for dinner or before bed:
- One of the best ways to lose body fat is to rearrange a few things without having to go on a specific diet. A little trick is to always eat the majority of carbs earlier in the day and taper off of them near bedtime. Carbs = energy and when you head to bed, those carbs only have one place to go- your butt. Dinner should consist of lean protein and veggies instead of starchy foods like pasta, breads or rice.
