This is the place to talk about Alaska politics, state, local, national. Public life in the Last Frontier has rarely been more interesting -- a full slate of federal and state elections, the influence of former Gov. Sarah Palin, the usual hardball Alaska politics. Come here for news, tidbits and information, and join the discussion. We encourage lively debate, but please keep it civil and stay on point. Don't use profanity, make crude comments or attack other posters. Posts that violate the Terms of Use will be deleted. Repeat offenders will lose their ability to post comments.

House majority meeting to talk politics, pick new rules chair

From Sean Cockerham in Anchorage –
The Republican-led state House majority will meet in Fairbanks Wednesday and Thursday to make committee assignments and talk about the upcoming legislative session.
The most chatter going into the meeting is about who will be replacing John Coghill in the influential position of rules chair.
The rules chair schedules which bills appear on the floor for a vote (once they reach the floor it’s usually guaranteed they’ll pass) and it is one of a handful of coveted leadership jobs.
Names mentioned as candidates for the rules chair position include Nancy Dahlstrom of Eagle River and Bob Lynn of Anchorage.
Coghill gave up the job when Gov. Sean Parnell appointed him to the state Senate. The majority this week will also likely talk about what committee assignments to give Tammie Wilson, who Parnell chose to replace Coghill in the House.
