Rural blog

The Village is a Daily News blog about life and politics in rural Alaska. Its main author is ADN reporter Kyle Hopkins. Come here for breaking news on village issues, plus interviews, videos and photos. But that's just part of the story. We want to feature your pictures, videos and stories, too. Think of The Village as your bulletin board. E-mail us anything you’d like to share with the rest of Alaska -- your letters to the editor, the photos of your latest hunt or video of your latest potlatch. (We love video.)

I was born in Sitka, have lived in Kake, Skagway and Fairbanks and joined the ADN in 2005 after writing for the Anchorage Press and Fairbanks Daily News-Miner. I started blogging for the paper in 2006 with The Trail, our blog about the governor's race. Then came the Alaska Politics blog. Now I'm covering government and rural affairs and live in Anchorage with my wife, Rebecca. (Update: Our daughter Alice was born May 31. Thanks everyone for the suggestions.) Snowmachiner convicted of '05 negligent homicide arrested Friday near Fairbanks

A man on parole for hitting someone with a defective snowmachine was arrested Friday on Chena Hot Springs Road for driving with a suspended license, troopers say.

Jack Cannan Boyle hit 42-year-old Richard Crow in Christmas Eve, 2005, when Crow was lying on a slippery road in Circle with drugs and alcohol in his system, The Associated Press reported at the time. Boyle was going as fast as 50 miles per hour at the time on a snowmachine that had no brakes, dim lights and other defects.

On Friday, troopers say Boyle, now 31, was driving with a suspended license on Mile 9 of Chena Hot Springs Road, near Fairbanks. They say he also violated parole by consuming alcohol. He was taken to jail in Fairbanks.

Here's the trooper report:

Location: Mile 9 Chena Hot Springs Rd
On 11/20/2009 at 2147 hrs, the AST Bureau of Highway Patrol, Northern Region, stopped a white 2000 Buick car for speeding. The driver was identified as Jack Cannan Boyle, age 31 of Fairbanks. Investigation revealed Boyle was driving the car while his driving privileges were suspended. Further, he was found to be in violation of his conditions of parole by consuming alcohol. Boyle is on parole for Criminally Negligent Homicide due to his role in a motor vehicle fatality. Boyle was arrested for Driving While License Suspended and Parole Violation. He was remanded at Fairbanks Correctional Center and held with no bail pending arraignment. The owner of the car, Priscilla Elizondo, age 20 of Fairbanks, was a passenger. Investigation revealed she allowed Boyle to drive, knowing full well he had no driver's license. Further, she was found to have been consuming alcohol. She was issued citations to appear in court for Allowing an Unauthorized Driver and Minor Consuming Alcohol.
