College Pucks: Cassi Campbell Makes Season Debut With Shutout (And Other Notable Performances By Alaskans)

Comments (0) |

Wisconsin-River Falls junior goaltender Cassi Campbell of Anchorage backstopped her Division III team's season debut Friday night, and rocked a 41-save bagel in a 1-0 win over St. Thomas.

Campbell helped snuff eight power plays by St. Thomas.

Her effort was one of several notable performances by Alaskans in college hockey Friday. (By the way, today River Falls sophomore goalie Melissa Deardorff of Anchorage made her season debut and bagged a 17-save shutout in a 5-0 win over Augsburg).

Let's take a quick run-through:

In men's Division I action, Colgate freshman defenseman Nathan Sinz of Anchorage picked up his first college point, an assist on the game-winning goal in a 5-4 win over visiting Harvard.

North Dakota junior winger Evan Trupp of Anchorage bagged his second goal of the season in a 4-2 win at Michigan Tech and owns 2-4--6 totals in seven games (UPDATE: Trupp added two goals in a 4-1 win tonight, so make that 4-4--8 in eight games). Senior forward Jason Shaffer of Eagle River played his first game of the season for Union and racked an assist in a 3-3 tie against Brown. Colorado College freshman winger William Rapuzzi of Anchorage scored his third goal of the season in a 4-3 loss to Minnesota-Duluth -- he owns 3-1--4 totals in six matches. (Rapuzzi added the game-winning goal and a helper tonight in a 6-2 win over the Bulldogs, so make that 4-2--6 in seven games).

(Also in Division I, Notre Dame beat host UAF 3-2 to hand the Nanooks (5-1-1) their first loss. UAF outshot the Irish, 37-17, including 16-3 in the third period).

In men's Division III play, senior forward Shane Wheeler of Eagle River scored two goals and added a helper, and senior defenseman Sam Tikka bagged two assists, to lead St. Norbert (4-0-0) to an 8-2 demolition of Bethel. (Wheeler owns 5-4--9 totals in four games).

On the women's Division I front, Ohio State junior defenseman Teal Bishop of Fairbanks scored her third goal of the season, but North Dakota freshman defenseman Candace Molle bested that with two assists, including one on the game-winning goal, in North Dakota's 5-4 win.

And Rensselaer sophomore defenseman Amanda Castignetti of Anchorage furnished an assist in a 10-4 thumping of Colgate.
