Cheverie's Injury Makes Anchorage's Murray The Man At DU For Now

Expect to see freshman Adam Murray of Anchorage in goal for the University of Denver twice next week, when the Pioneers -- ranked No. 2 nationally in one poll, No. 3 in another -- come here to play a Western Collegiate Hockey Association series against UAA.

That's because Pioneers junior standout Marc Cheverie left early in the third period of Friday night's 4-3 win over Minnesota State-Mankato after suffering a cut to his left leg. Cheverie was carried off on a stretcher. The Denver Post’s Mike Chambers reports DU coach George Gwozdecky saying Cheverie could miss a couple weeks.

Before he was hurt, Cheverie (4-0-0, 1.27, .959, 3 shutouts) extended his shutout streak to a school-record 223 minutes, 51 seconds.

Murray stopped seven of eight shots in relief and picked up his first college victory. He's 1-2-0 with a 4.55 goals-against average and .841 save percentage. Presumably, he will start tonight's series finale against the visiting Mavericks. (UPDATE: Murray stopped 30 shots in a 4-4 tie tonight).

Oh, DU defenseman William Wrenn of Anchorage furnished an assist last night in the Pioneer win. He has two assists in six games. (UPDATE: Make that three assists in seven games -- he chipped in a helper tonight).

Wrenn, a second-round draft pick of the San Jose Sharks last summer, is +4, which ties for the team lead. (UPDATE: Wrenn went +2 tonight).
