Smoke House is mighty mighty

A new barbecue shack recently appeared on the corner of Debarr Road and Boniface Parkway, in the parking lot of the Shell gas station. The aptly named Smoke House lures in hungry drivers with clouds of smoke from an outdoor grill and signs advertising a $5 special.

A co-worker and I hit the Smoke House’s drive-thru today (there’s no room for indoor seating – it’s just a trailer) for a late lunch. We pulled up without a wait and were handed a menu. An employee told us that the Boniface location had been open for four weeks and was operated by the same folks that run the Smoke House shack on the corner of Minnesota Drive and Northern Lights Boulevard. Here’s a Daily News review of the Minnesota location from March.

I opted for the $5 special today, which was a smoked sausage with a cherry Dr. Pepper barbecue sauce. Diners who choose the special can also add two sides for $2, a buck less than normal. I also got the baked beans and potato salad.

The sausage was lightly covered in the dark red sauce, which was sweet and smoky. Yum. My only complaint was that the kielbasa-style dog was cut about an inch shorter than the bun. There was nothing special about the side of baked beans, but the house-made potato salad was standout.

My co-worker’s pulled pork sandwich barely fit in its Styrofoam box, it was packed with moist and tender meat and topped with a shot of barbecue sauce.

Because the meat for both shacks is prepared at the Debarr location, owner Owner Hailey Fike said it sometimes has different specials than the Minnesota shack, which normally showcases its pork sandwich.

The Debarr location is open10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Saturday – an hour later than the Minnesota location. For information on catering and ordering call 250-6884.
