ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) — A 47-year-old Anchorage man has been sentenced to 45 years in prison for what authorities said was an "inexplicable" killing along a bike trail.
Roger Perkins in June pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in the shooting death of 48-year-old Elmer Patrick on April 12, 2008.
Perkins, Patrick and Donald Lentz were drinking beer along the Campbell Creek Trail near Arctic Boulevard when Perkins pulled a .45-caliber pistol from a shoulder holster and shot Patrick in the right temple.
There had been no argument and the men had apparently not met before the day of the shooting.
At the sentencing Friday, Superior Court Judge Jack Smith said the killing was senseless and Perkins' conduct was inexplicable.
