Responses to my essays remind me of a very old joke:
Psychiatrist gives patient an ink blot test.
“What does this ink blot remind you of?”
“Sex.”
“What about this one?”
“Sex.”
“This one over here?”
“Sex.”
“And, finally, this one?”
“Sex.”
“Hm, you seem preoccupied with sex.”
“Not at all; you’re the one who keeps showing me those dirty pictures.”
Once I classified acts of terrorism in three different categories, with examples: terrorism financed by the United States, terrorism influenced by the United States and terrorism the United States has nothing to do with. So, someone accuses me of saying the US is responsible for all the terrorism in the world. What do I make of that?
What do I do about all the name-calling, straw man arguments and other attacks ad hominem? Do I respond to the charges or do I let them go and trust the process that most readers will recognize the politically-posturing phonies by their words? Some of them are so downright funny, I yield to the temptation to address them. Then some person with more wisdom than I points out the blogs turn into—if I’m allowed to say this in good taste—urination contests. I’m reminded of the advice about wrestling with pigs.
Maybe I can address these responses generically. So, I’ll make the following statement: Some estimate that 3000-4000 fetuses are aborted in our country each day.
This time, let me join the fun with excerpts from my favorite commenters:
--I notice you didn’t mention all the liberals who abort their babies.
--You blame evil American imperialism for all the abortions in the world.
--What about all the abortions committed by PETA, People for the American Way, the ACLU, Jane Fonda, Michael Moore, Susan Sarandon and Barack Obama?
--You’re so right. Multi-national corporations are to blame for abortions.
--If only we lived in perfect world, where you could count on kindness and all our bills were paid by the tooth fairy. You live a dream world and need a dose of reality. Wake up and smell the roses; there are two wars going on. In the real world, sometimes innocent fetuses get killed as collateral damage. In war time some innocent people get killed. Get over it.
--Why is it you’re so obsessed with Israel? Can’t you ever write about anything else?
---The reason women abort their fetuses so much is because of Obama’s socialism and his friends at the Anchorage Daily Pravda.
-- Most, if not all of those fetuses were killed as human shields of Muslim terrorists.
--Of course, you liberals are afraid to admit the Reagan Revolution ended communism, erased the deficit, balanced the budget and rid America once and for all of the heartbreak of psoriasis.
--I notice you never said whether you ever had an abortion. Are you trying to hide something?
--You’re so anti-Semitic you didn’t admit Muslims abort babies, too.
--There you go again—blaming the US for every evil in the world. Not once, in that sentence did you mention other countries abort their children, too. But you love France and Germany too much to admit that. That’s because you’re an isolationist.
--So our country made some mistakes and turned out to be less than perfect. It’s easy to criticize with 20-20 hindsight.
--You’re drinking the Kool-Aid out of a tinfoil hat.
--Why don't you just admit you hate Israel?
--It’s just part of the leftist agenda—blame America first.
--No one has ever proved there’s global warming.
--I notice you didn’t mention that blacks, Hispanics, Asians and Natives abort their kids, too. You’d rather play the race card.
Maybe the best way to end this essay is with a quote from one of the plays of that extreme leftist William Shakespeare, “Methinks you doth protest too much.”
