Cocktail Updates and a Reason to Celebrate

Cheers, nightlifers — today (August 25) is National Whiskey Sour Day! I know it’s not everyone’s favorite, but it’s a standard and it’s been around since the 1870s. In fact, I know several people who crave the mouth-puckering, throat-burning freshness of a WS when heading out or relaxing at home with friends. I took some tips from Colleen Graham at About.com’s cocktail blog and included some variations on the classic recipe below. But the best part about a WS is that any bartender, at any bar (and I will take on this challenge) knows how to make one.

Whiskey Sour: Classic recipe

Ingredients:
1 1/2 oz whiskey
1 1/2 oz lemon juice
3/4 oz sugar syrup
maraschino cherry for garnish

Preparation: Pour the bourbon, lemon juice, and sugar syrup into a cocktail shaker with ice cubes. Shake well. Strain into a chilled sour glass. Garnish with the cherry.

You can also switch the base liquor for a different sour experience. Common variations include a Absinthe Sour, Amaretto Sour, Apple Sour, Apricot Sour, Gin Sour, Grand Marnier Sour, Kahlua Sour, Midori Sour, Pisco Sour, Rum Sour, Scotch Sour, Tequila Sour and Vodka Sour.

Find out more on Colleen’s cocktail blog.
