AWAIC Shelter Gets Funding

An update to my post last week about the Abused Women's Aid in Crisis (AWAIC) shelter. The shelter was at capacity and faced with turning clients away. Thompson & Co. Public Relations helped spread the word about the crisis and it worked. Today, Sen. Lisa Murkowski announced additional funding for AWAIC. While today's announcement is a great help to AWAIC, the organization is still in need of additional donations and funding. Here is the News Release from Sen. Murkowski's office:

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Sen. Lisa Murkowski, R-Alaska, secured $200,000 for the Abused Women’s Aid in Crisis, or AWAIC, shelter in Anchorage in a Fiscal Year 2010 appropriations bill that cleared the Transportation and Housing and Urban Development Subcommittee today.

“This funding will help AWAIC make needed structural repairs to its facility so they can continue providing a safe haven for victims of domestic violence,” said Murkowski, a member of the Senate Appropriations Committee. The Transportation and Housing and Urban Development bill is scheduled for a vote by the full appropriations panel Thursday before moving to the Senate floor for consideration.

Last month Murkowski called on the head of the Justice Department’s Violence Against Women office to provide up to $552,000 to help the AWAIC shelter cope with serious over-capacity. That request is still pending.

Murkowski today announced a total of $8.1 million in funding for Alaska projects in the Transportation and Urban Development bill.

“This funding will pay for a variety of vital roads and bridges, airport lighting and urban development projects across Alaska, ranging from municipal bridges and trestles replacement in Ketchikan to the relocation of a crisis center facility in Anchorage,” Murkowski said.
