From David Hulen in Anchorage --
That's the headline on a story at Politico today exploring whether the governor will seek re-election next year or pursue national aspirations. Not a lot new information in the piece, which has a mix of on-the-record interviews (Halcro, Ruedrich) and anonymous sources ("a former Palin staffer," "a Washington-based Democratic operative"). But it frames it a little differently than we've seen.
Excerpt:
Top Republicans and Democrats across Alaska are quietly lining up to run for governor amid growing speculation that Sarah Palin will not seek reelection in 2010.
No candidate, including Palin, has yet filed papers with the Alaska Public Offices Commission. Palin’s office declined an opportunity to explain her thinking on the 2010 race, and the Republican Governors Association said it would not comment on discussions it has had with the governor.
But a number of Democrats and Republicans in Alaska and Washington who spoke to POLITICO believe her silence is a sign she will not pursue a second term as governor so that she can play a larger role on the national political stage.
Ruedrich says he'd like Palin to decide by this fall so other GOP candidates have time to organize campaigns for next year's election. But the piece notes that it's in the governor's interests to wait as long as possible to keep options open and minimize time as a lame duck if she decides not to seek a second term.
