Are parents really using their cell phones as the modern day baby rattle? Well, according to an Associated Press article they are. And yes, I am one of those parents.

I've blogged about iPhone applications for kids last year, and the choice of kid-friendly, entertaining and educational applications has exploded.

Here are the latest ones on my iPhone that are keeping my nearly 3-year-old daughter enthralled and encouraging her to learn spelling, counting, shapes and colors faster than her peers. Not to mention she wows grownups with her iPhone dexterity.

1. Bumblebee Touchbook - This charming program plays a little animated video of a bee and encourages counting and reading. The interactive storybook is particularly engaging.

2. Coloring Book: Creatures - A palette of colors is available for your little one to select to create their renderings of animals. With the touch of a fingertip, the color fills in the picture. Pink elephants and purple giraffes!

3. Disney Fairies Fly - The video of the Tinkerbell fairy friends is sweet and any little girl's favorite. Mastering the flying game is a little more challenging but fun nonetheless.

4. First Words: Animals - Learning the spelling and sound of words makes this a straightforward educational offering with cute cartoons of animals and animal sounds to boot.

5. Shape Builder - Since my daughter loves jigsaw puzzles, this is a fantastic electronic puzzle game for her. The free version has a limited number of puzzles while the paid version has over 100.

6. Giraffe's PreSchool Playground - ABCs, numbers, animals, matching games, this app has a lot of variety to keep a toddler busy.

7. Ladybug Tree - A fun counting game where you drag ladybugs into a jar and a voice counts them as you add them.

8. Memory Match by Jirbo - Last year, my daughter didn't understand the concept of turning over cards and finding the matching images. Now that she gets the gist of this game, she is building up great memory skills.

9. SuperPoke Pets - My daughter enjoys feeding, bathing and tickling her digital pet which she named something like sdpw3intesldiucnjekwer.

10. Where's Gumbo - What toddler doesn't like flap books? This is a digital storybook with electronic flaps!
