The Pebble Blog

The gigantic Pebble copper and gold prospect in Southwest Alaska is one of the touchiest topics in Alaska today.

In this blog, I'll track news that is significant or interesting about the Pebble project. I'll also try to generate discussion and information sharing about some of the claims and counterclaims about the project, and mining in general.

Please keep your comments courteous and on topic. If you violate the ADN comment policy, your posts will be deleted.

About Elizabeth Bluemink ebluemink@adn.com

I've been writing about mining in Alaska since 2004 and without a doubt, it is one of the most interesting topics that I cover at the Daily News. I've been a newspaper reporter for the past 10 years. In the Deep South, I specialized in reporting about environmental conflicts and pollution cleanups. For two years, I covered commercial fishing, mining and logging in Southeast Alaska. In my current job as a Daily News business reporter, I write about mining, tourism, Native corporations and other businesses.

Here is the announcement I received today from the Alaska Community Foundation:

------------------------

Pebble Fund Accepting Grant Applications

Bristol Bay Area Nonprofits Urged to Apply for Sustainable Community Funds

Anchorage – Communities throughout the Bristol Bay region are invited to apply for grants from The Pebble Fund during the Fund’s second semi-annual competitive grant cycle opening June 1. Applications from eligible organizations must be received by The Alaska Community Foundation no later than Sept. 1, 2009. The Fund will award up to $1 million in small and large grants to qualifying organizations during this grant period. Applications are available online on The Alaska Community Foundation’s Web site (www.alaskacf.org/grants) or by calling 907/334-6700.

Grants are available to 501(c)(3) organizations in the Bristol Bay region, including schools, churches and government agencies. Funding will focus on programs related to renewable resources/fish, energy, community and economic development, and education.

The Pebble Partnership created The Pebble Fund to support a broad range of community-led initiatives that contribute to a sustainable economic future for the region and enhance the health of Bristol Bay fisheries. In March, The Pebble Fund awarded $1 million in awards for 33 projects in the Bristol Bay Region. A complete list of funded projects is available on the ACF website.

The Fund is administered and managed by The Alaska Community Foundation. Since 1996, the Alaska Community Foundation has built successful partnerships with donors and nonprofits to improve the quality of life for Alaskans. ACF facilitates gifts from thousands of generous individuals and families, and last year these donors awarded grants of more than $10 million to a broad range of area nonprofit organizations. ACF offers a range of charitable funds, allowing donors to advance a cause, support an individual organization, or provide flexible support for community needs. For more information about the Foundation, visit www.alaskacf.org or call 907-334-6700.
