From Sean Cockerham in Anchorage --
Gov. Sarah Palin is joining the debate over California beauty queen Carrie Prejean.
Prejean has been getting a lot of media attention since her comments in opposition to same sex marriage at the Miss USA pageant. Prejean has said she believes it cost her the title (she was runner up.)
Palin called Prejean in support and tonight sent out a statement through Meg Stapleton, her spokeswoman on national issues.
Here's Palin's statement:
The liberal onslaught of malicious attacks against Carrie Prejean for expressing her opinion is despicable.
Carrie and I spoke soon after the attacks started; I can relate as a liberal target myself. What I find so remarkable is that these politically-motivated attacks fail to show that what Carrie and I believe is also what President Obama and Secretary Clinton believe - marriage is between a man and a woman.
I applaud Donald Trump for standing with Carrie during this time. And I respect Carrie for standing strong and staying true to herself, and for not letting those who disagree with her deny her protection under the nation's First Amendment Rights.
Our Constitution protects us all - not just those who agree with the far left.
Prejean caused a stir at the Miss USA pageant when she was asked her view of same sex marriage by celebrity judge and blogger Perez Hilton.
Subsequent controversies over the surfacing of semi-nude photographs and her association with the conservative National Organization for Marriage led to some calls for Prejean to lose her Miss California USA crown. But pageant owner Donald Trump said yesterday she could keep it. Here's some background on this.
