Will Oprah Kill Twitter?

The "Twitterverse" has been all abuzz with the recent uptick in celebrity participation on Twitter. Actor and producer Ashton Kutcher (@aplusk) has been spending an inordinate amount of time Twittering his life with wife--and superstar--Demi Moore (@mrskutcher), including personal and intimate photographs behind-the-scenes of their jet-setting lifestyle.

Recently, Kutcher challenged CNN's Breaking News (@cnnbrk) to a Twitter contest for a good cause. He pledged to donate 10,000 mosquito nets to a charity called Malaria No More if he was able to reach 1 million Twitter followers before CNN. The race was on yesterday and was close for hours. When he won, Kutcher broadcast his celebrating live via Ustream.tv.

Kutcher also helped bring Oprah Winfrey (@oprah) onto Twitter this week, and Oprah made her first tweets live on her television show today. Yesterday, Oprah had 55,000 followers. At the time of this post, she has over 237,000.

Is this a good thing? Are celebrities going to make or break Twitter? And when I say break, I mean both figuratively and literally.

Anyone who has been using Twitter daily will know the pains of daily Twitter "outages" known affectionately (sort of) as "Fail Whales" because of the appealing error message image displayed when the Twitter servers hiccup from overactivity. With the phenomenal attention driving the mainstream public to the popular microblog, celebrities may be the death of Twitter as we've known it.

But as I've written before, Twitter has truly changed the way we communicate in ways we are still realizing and discovering. By hitting critical mass, Twitter could become even more interesting and valuable to those who use it.

Or then again, it could become total chaos.

Time will tell if celebrities will truly bring value to the Twittersphere. I am particularly interested--and impressed--when they leverage their star power along with Twitter power for a good cause. This week, another celebrity--actor Hugh Jackman (@realhughjackman) pledged $100,000 to a charity if a Twitterer gave him a compelling reason to give in 140 characters or less on Twitter. Of course, when I tried to authenticate his request, I never received a response, so it remains to be seen if the offer is genuine.

What do you think about celebrities joining Twitter? And are you following any celebrities on Twitter? If so, who?
