Matt Zencey
Matt Zencey joined the Daily News as an editorial writer in 1985 and was named editorial page editor in May 2007. He has won several. "Best editorial writing" awards from the Alaska Press Club and was a Nieman Fellow in Journalism at Harvard University. Frank Gerjevic

Regular readers and writers of letters to the editor are looking at a tighter section.
You’re not alone. Editorial writers won’t be going long much, either.
With a page a day to work with (except for Sundays, when we have two), space is at a premium. So the new letters max is 175 words. Expansive by the standards of twitter and haiku, but 50 words shorter than the previous top.
Call it a challenge. Summon inspiration.
Napoleon (maybe): “Able was I, ere I saw Elba.”
Mark Twain: “I’ve had a lot of worries in my life, most of which never happened.”
Robert E. Lee: “Strike the tent.” (last words)
Thucydides: “Having done what men could, they suffered what men must.”
Sheila Toomey: “And the women cleaned up after them.”
Daily News critic from the ’80s: “Blowin’ in the wind is where I’d like to see your newspaper, if it weren’t for the litter problem.”
Ring Lardner: “Shut up, he explained.”
Neither headline nor signature count against the limit, and with that my 175 is up.
