Here is another series of emails between Gov. Palin and myself. I hadn’t intended to post these, but Sharon Leighow in the governor’s press office wrote this morning to ask, on behalf of the governor, that I post hers.
What you will see is first an email from me, written yesterday, saying that since almost two weeks had passed and I hadn’t received a reply to my New Year’s Eve email – though the ADN had been the subject of a critical press release from her office – I planned to post the original email.
She replied shortly thereafter, and I responded to her late that afternoon.

Gov. Palin:
I have not received a reply to my (Dec. 31) email addressing several complaints you made about coverage of you and your family in the paper. I appreciated the fact that you brought those issues to my attention. I took your complaints seriously and tried to answer them fully. I am surprised not to have heard anything back from you, except for the press release saying that the Daily News had refused to correct errors you had brought to our attention. I don't believe that's true, and I took pains to explain why in my email.
So that there is a full response to the press release, as far as it speaks about the Daily News, I'm going to post your complete letter and my response on my editor's blog on adn.com. I just wanted to let you know that. We are not in reality and do not wish to be perceived as antagonistic to your administration. This is merely the newspaper version of transparency and accountability.
I also want to reiterate our invitation for you to bring any concerns about our coverage to my personal attention. That discussion can be as public or as private as you choose. The bottom line is that, as far as coverage of you, your administration and your family, I am ready at any time to explain what we're doing and why.
Sincerely,
Pat Dougherty

I did not know you'd want to publicize my e-mail to you, but that is your prerogative.
I apologize if I've taken too long to respond, but after receiving your response wherein you asserted that no corrections are warranted, I did not want to waste your time getting into a tit-for-tat dialogue. I acknowledge that you own the ink.
I would ask again, though, that you check facts before running any stories, and request that you get input from administration officials when writing about issues that involve state government.
Further, I believe the public's desire is to have confidence that you have fact-checked your columnists' pieces. It certainly seems to many of us that they go unchecked. I respect that editorial page content is for opinion, but find it tough to respect any practice that allows for unsubstantiated allegations. With such limited amounts of hard news in your recently streamlined paper, I believe it's more important than ever to make sure what you print is truthful and accurate.
I'm expressing a quite simple and fundamental desire for accuracy in your paper. But having said that, I again acknowledge that it is your paper and you own the ink, and we evidently are agreeing to disagree on the need for the corrections/clarifications I requested.
A quick correction regarding your allegation that I claimed in our press release that you "failed to correct errors." Please re-read the presser. The mention of the ADN was in reference to your ridiculous pursuit of the "Who's Trig's Real Mother . . ." angle. You say you have not "received any cooperation . . . from the parties who, in (your) judgment, stood to benefit most from the story, namely (me and my family)."
Pat, we have cooperated. I told you I gave birth to Trig. My family and I were interviewed by local and national press on this, as was my doctor. We released my medical summary to national press. How much more "cooperation" can we provide before that line of questioning ends? And to read your comment that the recent rounds of questions regarding Trig may still not be the end of the story is a bit unbelievable. Surely you have more to report on than that sensational rumor. At this point, I do not blame my doctor for not wanting to comment further, and I join her in saying enough is enough, I will no longer continue to try to prove that Trig is my son. . . unless you offer to pay for a DNA test that can finally kill the most asinine story I have ever been asked to comment on. (I'm only half-joking!)
Thank you for your patience in awaiting my response. I do hope for nothing but the best for our local newspaper in these trying economic times that have hit your parent company.

Gov. Palin:
Thanks for your response. I was expecting a reply to my earlier email because I asked a number of questions intended to clarify your position. I didn't say we wouldn't correct, I said I didn't understand exactly what you thought was in error and why. That's why I was surprised to see a press release a week later apparently criticizing the Daily News, among others, for not correcting false information.
I haven't disagreed with you yet about the need for the corrections/clarifications you requested. First, I need a better understanding of your position.
We do check facts before running stories, and even columns. We've always felt factual accuracy is of paramount importance. That hasn't changed and won't. But we cannot literally check every fact in every wire story, and we do make our own mistakes. Sometimes the best we can do is to correct them after the fact.
Governor, as far as the Trig matter is concerned, you have my sympathy. I have no doubt that Trig is your son. The Daily News has never done a story raising the question of whether Trig is your son and we weren't planning to start in December. I did think a story about how such a baseless, internet-fueled, sensational rumor could become so widespread and persistent would be interesting. (I now think of it as one of my no-good-deed-goes-unpunished things.)
If the story had been done, with Lisa Demer's typical thoroughness, I think you would have found it helpful in putting this nonsense to rest. I personally would have liked to be responsible for that. But that's water under the bridge. We have no further interest (unless you really want us to help out with a DNA test; that would be too sensational to pass up).
As you suggest, these are tough times for newspapers. Having a bunch of conspiracy nuts denouncing the Daily News for hiding your secret just adds to the overall happy ambience.
Sincerely,
Pat
