Longtime burglar gets maximum sentence

A longtime burglar has received a maximum 11-year sentence.

Superior Court Judge Patrick McKay imposed the sentence Thursday on Ray Helveston who was convicted of burglarizing a local artist's home in 2007.

McKay found that Helveston was a worst offender having been convicted of five prior felonies and numerous misdemeanors.

Authorities say Helveston stole approximately $50,000 worth of artwork and memorabilia from the artist's home.

He is awaiting sentencing on another residential burglary case from earlier in 2007, where he faces the same potential penalty. He is scheduled to be sentenced Jan. 9.
