Kimbi's 2 Short-handers Recalls 2 Even Cooler Ones

Former Alaska Aces center Kimbi Daniels provided ECHL Phoenix with a pair of short-handed goals less than five minutes apart Saturday night in a 3-2 win at Bakersfield, but as impressive as that feat was it paled in our estimation in comparison to some short-handed work he did in 2006.

Both of Kimbi's shorties Saturday came with the RoadRunners down one man -- the first one in a 4-on-3 situation, the second in a 5-on-4 scenario.

But puckheads may recall that on the way to the Kelly Cup in 2006, Kimbi twice struck in the playoffs when the Aces were down two men -- both times he cashed in despite 5-on-3 disadvantages.

In any event, that game Saturday in Bako had a distinctly Alaska feel -- four of the five goals scored came from dudes with AK connections. Also scoring for Phoenix was former Aces center Gino Guyer. Scoring one of Bako's goals was former UAA Seawolves captain Charlie Kronschnabel.

Also Saturday, former UAA and Aces winger Justin Johnson of Anchorage notched his first goal of the season for ECHL Utah in a 5-2 win over Las Vegas. But don't think JJ is all finesse -- he also fought and received a game misconduct.

Oh, and one last ECHL note -- check out the blowouts on the weekend. After Florida dismantled host Augusta 12-0 on Saturday, South Carolina punked visiting Mississippi 10-0 on Sunday.

And while we're speaking of former Aces, sniper Chris Minard bagged his league-leading 16th goal, which was also his league-leading eighth power-play strike, for Wilkes-Barre/Scranton in Sunday's 4-2 American Hockey League loss at Lake Erie. Minard has scored points in 17 of 18 games this season and ranks second on the circuit in points with 16-11--27 totals in 18 games.
