Bummer: No Go For Crabb Tonight

Comments (0) |

Just when it looked like right wing Joey Crabb of Anchorage might make his NHL debut tonight, the dream got put on hold.

Crabb, who the Atlanta Thrashers called up from Chicago of the American Hockey League, had hoped to play in tonight's home game against Columbus. He was called up because Thrashers center Todd White apparently absorbed a wicked hit from Pittsburgh's Kris Letang in Thursday night's 3-2 Thrashers loss.

But White was good enough to go tonight, and is in the lineup. That left Crabb, 25, a healthy scratch.

Drag for Joey, whose call-up to the NHL was the first of his career in three pro seasons. Small consolation: With a $550,000 salary at the NHL level, he makes roughly $3,000 per day, so he's already banked $6,000 (minus those pesky taxes) since his call-up. Still, something tells me he'd play that first NHL game for free just to be able to realize his dream.

In any event, maybe he'll get a shot next week, provided of course he stays on call-up. The Thrashers play at Toronto on Tuesday and at Washington on Wednesday.
