Crabb Promoted to NHL Atlanta

Comments (0) |

Big news today -- third-year right winger Joey Crabb of Anchorage was called up to the NHL by the Atlanta Thrashers.

Crabb, 25, owns 5-5--10 totals in 16 games with the Chicago Wolves of the American Hockey League. The former Colorado College standout has scored two short-handed goals, which ties him for second in the league, and has furnished a +10 rating that ties him for 13th.

Atlanta entertains Columbus on Saturday.

Should Crabb play, he would become the 12th Alaskan to play in the NHL. He returned a call this afternoon and said it looks like his NHL debut will be Saturday.

"They pretty much told me I'll play (Saturday), but who knows after that,'' Crabb said. "Pretty exciting.''

Crabb said he was having dinner with friends Thursday night when Chicago general manager Kevin Cheveldayoff phoned.

"I knew something was up because he never calls me,'' Crabb said.

Crabb said his GM told him he was promoted to Atlanta and was headed there Friday morning. Crabb arrived in Georgia in time to practice with the Thrashers.

Alaskans currently in the NHL are New York Rangers centers Scott Gomez and Brandon Dubinsky of Anchorage, Detroit Red Wings goaltender Ty Conklin of Anchorage, Philadelphia Flyers defenseman Matt Carle of Anchorage and New York Islanders center Nate Thompson of Anchorage.
