A Kivalina man who was violating his conditions of release by drinking and leaving his third-party custodian became combative with responding troopers and brandished a fork at them before escaping. Dispatch is below.

Text: On 11/18/2008, at approximately 0208 hours, Alaska State Troopers
contacted Greggory D. Larson, age 18 of Palmer. Larson was driving a
black 2001 Ford Escape that was stopped for an equipment violation.
Investigation revealed that Larson had a warrant for his arrest for FTA
on original charge of MCA. He was arrested on the warrant and was
remanded to the Mat-Su Pretrial Facility on $250.00 bail.

Text: On 11-28-08 at 0636 hours AST responded to an MVC at mile 54.6
Glenn Hwy. involving a semi tractor and a moose. The moose was dead and
given to a local charity. The semi was a 2001 Kenworth and received
about $20,000 damage to the front end. The driver, 55 year old Darrell
Wassman of Yelm, Washington, was not injured. The truck was towed from
the scene.

Under the Influence of Alcohol/drugs and Driving While License was

Text: On 11/17/08 at 0914 hours, 24 year old Blaine Dewalt of Fairbanks,
was driving a silver 2002 Dodge Dakota near mile 113 of the Parks Hwy
when he lost control and ran off the road. The vehicle flipped several
times before coming to rest right side up against a tree. The right
rear passenger was transported to the hospital for minor injuries.
Everyone involved was wearing a seatbelt, and no cites were issued.

Text: On 11/17/08 at 1319 hours, AST responded to a report of a motor
vehicle collision near mile 68 of the Parks Hwy. Investigation revealed
that 64 year old Gayle Schumacher of Talkeetna was driving her black
1995 Ford Explorer North when she lost traction in a corner and crossed
the center lane striking 81 year old Willa Harter of Willow in her blue
1998 Dodge Neon. Everyone involved was wearing a seatbelt and there
were no injuries. Schumacher was given a traffic citation and was
released from the scene. Both vehicles were driven from the scene.

Text: On 11/18/08 at approximately 1441 hours, Talkeetna AST stopped a
1996 Ford Taurus at Mile 70 Parks Highway for a traffic violation.
Subsequent investigation revealed that the driver, Michael Holder, 27 of
Willow, was driving without a valid drivers license. Holder was given a
summons to appear in court for NVOL and a traffic citation. Holder's
vehicle was released to a licensed driver.

Text: On 11-17-08, at about 1926 hours, Alaska State Troopers received a
report of an overdue snowmachiner in the Jim Creek area. Alaska State
Troopers with the assistance of the Butte Fire Department started a
ground search for Caleb Bennett, age 26, of Palmer. Bennett is believed
to have left his residence in the Butte on snowmachine heading to the
area of Jim Creek in Palmer. Bennett's snowmachine was reported to
have broken down and he needed assistance. Attempts to launch a
helicopter today were unsuccessful because of weather conditions. The
Butte Fire Department conducted the ground search for Bennett for over
3.5 hours along with the assistance of Bennett's friend, Ben Robinson.
Robinson and the Butte Fire Department were on snowmachines and six
wheelers searching for Bennett, but was unable to locate Bennett up to
the early morning hours. On 11-18-08, at approximately 1030 hours, three
Alaska Wildlife Troopers on snowmachines along with the assistance of an
Alaska Wildlife Troopers' Airplane and Alaska State Troopers helicopter,
Helo-1 resumed the search. They conducted the search over the Jim Creek
area. At 1212 hours, Alaska Wildlife Troopers heard someone yelling for
help. Helo-1 and Alaska Wildlife Troopers on the ground were able to
coordinate with each other. Helo-1 was then directed to the area where
the yelling was coming from. Helo-1 and Alaska Wildlife Troopers were
able to locate Bennett near the Hunter Creek area. Helo-1 landed and
picked Bennett up. Helo-1 then transported Bennett to Palmer Airport
where they were met by EMS. Bennett was then transported by EMS to
Mat-Su Regional Hospital. Bennett was reported to be suffering from
hypothermia and severe frostbite and is in stable condition.

Text: On 11-18-08 at approximately 1520 hours, AST received a report of
an expected home death near mile 0.5 Tok Cut Off in Gakona. The
deceased was identified as Mark Sabbatini, 48 yoa of Gakona. Sabbatini
had been suffering from severe liver problems and had Comfort One
paperwork on file. Sabbatini's next of kin were present at the time of
death. The SME has been notified and has released the body to the
family. At this time funeral arrangements are under way but no funeral
home has been selected. There is no foul play suspected in this case.

Type: Violating Conditions of Release, Resisting Arrest, Assault 3rd
Degree against a Police Officer, Escape 1st Degree, Violating a
Custodian's Duty (x2), warrant arrest (x3)
Text: On 11/17/08, at 2200 hours, State Troopers in Kotzebue responded
to Kivalina after receiving a report that Austin Swan Jr., 23 yoa, of
Kivalina had violated conditions of his release by consuming alcohol and
being outside the sight and sound of his third party custodians. Upon
their arrival, State Troopers contacted Swan who was asleep at his
residence. Once woken, Swan became uncooperative and combative with
State Troopers and when notified that he was under arrest he physically
resisted the Troopers efforts. During the altercation Swan grabbed a
fork from the kitchen and brandished it at the Trooper indicating that
he would use it as a weapon. Swan was eventually secured in mechanical
restraints during which time he was escorted outside the residence to be
walked to the aircraft and he again physically resisted the Troopers
efforts and escaped from custody. State Troopers were unable to
immediately locate Swan and dispatched additional Troopers from Kotzebue
who searched the village with no success. During the course of the
investigation State Troopers learned that Swan's parents, Nelda Swan, 57
and Austin Swan Sr., 60 yoa, both of Kivalina, were the third party
custodians and were aware that their son had violated the conditions of
his release by consuming alcohol and leaving their sight and sound, but
knowingly failed to report the violation. On 11/18/08, at 1230 hours,
State Troopers returned to Kivalina and contacted Austin Swan Jr. at a
family member's residence where he was asleep and still wearing the
mechanical restraints. Austin Swan Jr. was arrested pursuant to a
$25,000 arrest warrant Troopers obtained prior to their response.
Following the arrest of Austin Swan Jr., State Troopers responded to the
residence of Nelda and Austin Swan Sr. where they were placed under
arrest pursuant to $2,500 arrest warrants that were obtained for each
custodian on the charge of violating a custodian's duty. All three were
transported to Kotzebue and remanded at the Kotzebue Regional Jail
without incident. Austin Swan Jr. was on conditions of release for the
original charge of Assault 3 - D.V. and terroristic threatening.

Text: On 11/17/08 at approximately 2214 hours AST conducted a traffic
stop on a red 2007 Arctic Cat 4-wheeler for traveling on Coal Street.
AST identified Kristopher Dion Corbin, 33 YOA, of Healy who was
operating the 4-wheeler at the time of the stop. Corbin also had a
Revoked Driver's License due to a DUI and a previous charge of DWLR.
Corbin was issued a USC for DWLR and a UTC for operating a ATV upon a
public roadway.

Text: On 11/16/08 at approximately 1550 hours AST was contacted about a
traffic collision that involved 2 vehicles on the Parks Hwy at mile post
158 of the Parks Hwy. AST responded and contacted both drivers who had
damage to each of their vehicles. AST's investigation showed that
Macie Marie Baker, 19 YOA, of Fairbanks was operating a 1999 Pontiac
Grand Am while traveling North-Bound when it started to slide and
crossed the center line into the oncoming lane of traffic and collided
with a 2004 Chevrolet Avalanche that was traveling South-Bound. The
Chevrolet Avalanche lost control went into a spin and lost the left rear
tire causing it to be disabled. The Pontiac Grand Am then lost control
and drove into the ditch. Baker was citied for Basic Speed and Crossing
Left of Center. No drivers or passengers involved received any
injuries. Both vehicles were disabled and had to be towed from the
scene.

Text: On 11/17/08 at 2110 hours, Alaska State Troopers responded to
North Pole area residence for a report that James Thomas Hood, age 31 of
North Pole was violating his condition of release. Investigation
revealed Hood was in violation of his conditions of release for
contacting an individual he was not allowed to contact. Hood was
arrested on scene.

Substance
Text: On 11-17-08 at 1801 hours, Andre Rex Sanders, 61 of North Pole,
was arrested for Driving Under the Influence after he was contacted by
Alaska State Troopers for a traffic violation. During a search incident
to arrest, Sanders was found to be in possession of a small amount of
marijuana. Sanders was subsequently transported and remanded at
Fairbanks Correctional Center for Driving Under the Influence and
Misconduct Involving a Controlled Substance 6. Sanders' breath alcohol
content was .185%.

Text: On 11-17-08 at 1622 hours, AST responded to a report of a 2004
white Ford F450 service truck that had rolled off of Shaw Creek Rd. into
Shaw Creek. Investigation showed that the driver John E. FREIMUTH, 52
of Oregon, had slid off the road at the second curve on Shaw Creek Rd.
The truck rolled onto its top next to Shaw Creek after sliding sideways
down a 20 foot embankment. FREIMUTH was injured and transported by EMS
to Delta Family Clinic, then on to Allen Army Airfield for a medivac to
Fairbanks Memorial Hospital. Alcohol was not involved. snow and icy
road conditions were a major factor.

Type: Vehicle Theft X Two, Driving With a Revoked License
Text: On 11-18-08 Alaska State Troopers responded to a vehicle in the
ditch on Ivory Road. Investigation revealed the driver James BLAIR had
previously stolen the vehicle found in the ditch along with another
vehicle in the area and was driving on a revoked license. He had gotten
the first stolen vehicle stuck and was using the second stolen vehicle
to get the first on unstuck, causing damage to both. The vehicles had
belonged to a family member. Blair was remanded to Fairbanks
Correctional Center and held without bail.

Type: Theft 2 X 2, Criminal Trespass 1 X 2, Criminal mischief 4 & 5
Text: On 11/10/08, AST was notified of a theft of several hundred
gallons of fuel from a local business. It was also learned that a
second business across the street had also had several hundred gallons
of fuel stolen in the same time period. Brett King, 46, of Fairbanks
was identified as a suspect. After a joint effort by AST, the Alaska
Bureau of Alcohol and Drug Enforcement, and UAFPD, a search warrant was
served on King's residence and incriminating evidence was seized. On
11/18/08, King was arrested on two counts of theft 2nd degree, two
counts of criminal trespass 1st degree, and one count each of criminal
mischief 4th & 5th degree for damage property while taking the fuel. He
was taken to FCC, where he was held without bail. His accomplice has
been identified, and charges against him are pending.

Text: On 11-17-08, at approximately 0745 hours, Alaska State Troopers
out of Soldotna responded to mile 87.5 of the Sterling Hwy to
investigate the report of a vehicle in the ditch whose two occupants
were observed exiting the vehicle and running from the scene into the
woods. Investigation revealed that Joshua Allen Miller, age 25 of
Sterling, was driving the vehicle and Noel Archer Jasky-Zuber, age 18 of
Sterling, was the passenger. Miller was issued a summons for Driving
with a Revoked License and Jasky-Zuber was issued a summons for Minor
Consuming Alcohol. Investigation is on-going and additional charges are
being forwarded to the Kenai District Attorney's Office for review.

Flanagan while he was ice fishing on Jean Lake in Sterling.
Investigation revealed Flanagan was fishing three lines were only two

lines, hooks, or lures where only two are allowed and his bail was set
at $60.00.

Text: On 11/13/08, Klawock Wildlife Troopers contacted Nicholas D.
Blankenship, 30 yoa of Thorne Bay, just north of Thorne Bay on the 3000
road. Blankenship had taken a Buck Deer, but had failed to fully
validate his harvest ticket. Blankenship was issued a citation with a
bail amount of $160.00 for failing to validate his harvest ticket before
leaving the kill site. Arraignment was set for Craig District court.

Text: On 11/16/08 at 1630 hours, Alaska Wildlife Troopers issued a
summons to Brannon Finney, 21 yoa of Petersburg, in Petersburg for

Mitkof Hwy in Petersburg, by Troopers, for a moving traffic violation.
An investigation by Troopers revealed her Operator's License was
suspended. Arraignment is scheduled in the Petersburg District Court on

Type: Take Game Closed Area, Wanton Waste
Text: On 11/6/08 Alaska Wildlife Troopers in Tok discovered the
partially wasted carcass of a caribou located at the Taylor Highway
monument pullout near mile 22. Investigation has shown that sometime
during the evening of 11/5 or the early morning of 11/6, unknown persons
shot a caribou at the location, approximately 15 miles from the nearest
open area and salvaged only the 4 quarters from the animal. The meat of
the backstraps, neck, ribs, and brisket was all left to waste when the
hunters threw the remaining carcass into the ditch. Evidence was
collected by Troopers and the scene and the investigation is continuing.
Anyone with information as to the identity of persons involved or who
may have seen a vehicle at the monument during the aforementioned dates
is asked to contact AWT in Tok at 883-4471 or anonymously report the
information to Alaska Fish & Wildlife Safeguard at 1-800-478-3377.

Location: Mile 25 Taylor Highway - Unit 20E

Type: Take Game Closed Area, Shoot from, on, or Across Roadway
Text: On 11/2/08 Alaska Wildlife Troopers in Tok located an illegal
caribou kill site at Mile 25 of the Taylor Highway. Investigation has
revealed that on 11/1/08 sometime between the hours of 2pm and 4pm, two
unidentified males in a newer dark colored pickup truck with a
snowmobile in the bed, shot the caribou from the roadway approximately
10 miles outside the nearest federal corridor. The driver of the truck
is described as a male between the ages of 25-35 with dark slightly
curly hair and a dark beard. Wildlife Troopers are asking that anyone
with information as to the identities of either person or the location
of the suspect vehicle contact AWT in Tok at 883-4471. Callers could be
eligible for up to a $5000 cash reward by contacting Alaska Fish and

Text: On 11/16/08, Alaska Wildlife Troopers contacted Mark Ridgway, age
42, of Juneau, while he was deer hunting on Douglas Island. A check of
Ridgway's hunting license revealed he did not have deer harvest tickets
in possession. On 11/18/08, Wildlife Troopers issued a citation to
Ridgway for deer hunting without harvest tickets in possession. The bail
was set at $160.00 with an optional appearance in Juneau District Court.
