This is a new blog dedicated to the general topic of crime and crime prevention in Alaska. We are starting by posting the Alaska State Troopers' daily logs, our own crime-related stories and other relevant items as we come across them. The Daily News encourages community engagement and discussion of issues of crime and criminal justice. Comments are not edited and will be posted immediately. We know that stories about crime often provoke strong reactions, but we insist that you keep your comments on point, use good taste and show courtesy toward other writers. A Chalkyitsik man who allegedly led a prisoner out of a home at gunpoint, planning to execute him and then kill himself, has been charged with felony assault and kidnapping, troopers said. The kidnapping victim was able to wrest the gun away from his aggressor. Dispatch is below.

Location: Ketchikan

Case number: 08-94811

Type: MVC-D

Text: On 11-15-2008 at approximately 2231 hours, AST received a report
that there was a single vehicle accident at 5.8 mile N. Tongass Hwy.
Investigation revealed that Sara Yonker, age 16 of Ketchikan, was
driving her 1997 Jeep northbound on the N. Tongass Hwy when she hit a
patch of black ice. Yonker subsequently lost control of her vehicle and
crossed into the southbound lane of the N. Tongass Hwy. and struck a
guardrail. The vehicle sustained damage and both the driver and
passenger reported to be wearing seat belts and there were no injuries.

Location: Ketchikan

Case number: 08- 94942

Type: DWLS

Text: On 11-16-2008 at approximately 1153 hours, AST received a report
of a possible intoxicated driver. The caller stated that the vehicle
was a gray and black Chevrolet Blazer and was headed towards the North
Tongass Highway from Whipple Creek road in Ketchikan. AST observed the
vehicle at Mile 8 of the North Tongass Highway. AST conducted a traffic
stop on the vehicle after observing the vehicle weaving inside the lane
and hitting the fog line. Investigation revealed that the driver,
Steven Doran, age 23, of Ketchikan was driving on a suspended license.
Doran was placed under arrest and transported to the Ketchikan
Correctional Center without incident and bail was set at $500.00. Doran
was also issued a citation for Expired Registration and Failure to Show
Proof of Insurance.

Type: DWLS

Text: On 11-16-2008 at approximately 0202 hours, AST observed a vehicle
parked on the side of the N. Tongass Hwy at approximately 5.5 mile. AST
then made contact with the driver of the vehicle. Investigation revealed
that the driver, Steven Doran age 23 of Ketchikan, was driving on a
suspended license. Doran was placed under arrest and transported to the
Ketchikan Correctional Center without incident. Doran was released on
his own recognizance.

Type: Sexual Assault against a Minor

Text: On 11/16/08 at about 1355 hours, Alaska State Troopers received a
report of a sexual assault against a minor that occurred in Ketchikan.

Type: Assault IV - Sentence

Text: On 11-13-08, John R. Borglund, age 33 of the Lemon Creek
Correctional Center, was convicted on one count of Assault IV and two
counts of Petition to Revoke. In all, Borglund was sentenced to serve an
additional 90 days in jail. The Assault IV conviction was the result of
case in which Borglund assaulted a fellow inmate at the LCCC in February
of 2008.

Text: On 11/17/08 at approximately 0357 hours Alaska State Troopers
contacted two juvenile females walking in the roadway on
Wasilla-Fishhook Road in Wasilla. Investigation revealed that a female
juvenile, age 15 of Wasilla, and another female juvenile, age 14 of
Willow, had both been consuming alcohol prior to leaving a residence in
Wasilla. Both juveniles were issued a summons to appear in court for
Minor Consuming Alcohol and released to parents.

Type: MVC-D
Text: On 11-17-08 at approximately 0904 hours, Alaska State Troopers
responded to report of a two vehicle collision on Pittman Road and
Beverly Lakes Road in Wasilla. Investigation revealed that Danielle
Carter age 20 of Wasilla, was driving westbound on Beverly Lake Road in
her 1998 Chevy Blazer. Cynthia King age 41 of Wasilla, was traveling
northbound on Pittman Road at Beverly Lakes Road, in her 1996 Chevy
Suburban, when Carter's vehicle slid through the stop sign at Beverly
Lakes Road in front of Kings vehicle. King collided into the side of
Carter's vehicle. The damage to Carter's vehicle was estimated to be
approximately $3500.00. The damage to King's vehicle was estimated to
be approximately $1500.00. No injuries were reported and both parties
reported wearing theirs seatbelts at the time of the collision. Carter
was issued a citation for basic speed.

Type: Natural Death
Text: On 11-17-2008 at approximately 1109 hours, Alaska State Troopers
responded to a report of a natural death at a residence on Via
Tranquilla in Wasilla. Investigation revealed that Ellen Valley age 63
of Wasilla, was found deceased in her residence due to apparent chronic
illnesses. The next of kin was notified. No foul play is suspected.

Type: MVC-I

Text: On 11-17-2008 at approximately 1030 hours, Alaska State Troopers
responded to a single motor vehicle collision at the intersection of
Seward Meridian and Spruce Dr, near Wasilla. Investigation revealed
that Bryan Farris, age 19, of Eagle River, was operating his 1996 Ford
Aspire northbound on Seward Meridian when he lost control of the vehicle
and went off the roadway. Farris was wearing his seatbelt at the time
of the collision. He was transported to Mat-Su Regional Hospital with
moderate injuries. Damage to Farris' vehicle was estimated at $700.

Case number: 08-95122

Type: Burglary II, Theft II, Criminal Mischief IV

Text: On 11-17-2008 at approximately 1000 hours, Alaska State Troopers
responded to a building near Fireweed Rd and Meadow Valley Dr for a
report of a burglary. Investigation revealed forced entry into two
buildings by prying open the back doors. A snow blower and
approximately $1500 of antiques were taken from the building. The
damage to the doors was estimated at $150 each. Anyone with information

Text: On 11/15/08, at approximately 1445 hours, Alfred N Teeluk, 51 of
Kotlik was arrested for failing to register as a sex offender. Teeluk

Type: Assault IV DV

Text: On 11/16/08, at approximately 1130 hours, AST in Emmonak
responded to a reported assault at the Moore residence. Investigation
revealed that Matthew Moore, 25 had been assaulted by a juvenile
brother. Moore was treated at the Emmonak Sub-Regional Health Clinic
for his injuries. Investigation is on going.

Type: Assault 4

Text: On 11/15/08, Dillingham based Alaska State Troopers received a
complaint of an assault that occurred on 11/13/08 at the New Stuyahok
School. A teacher at the school was punched in the face by a 10 yo male
student. The student was suspended and a criminal investigation
continues.

Location: Noorvik

Case number: 08-93195

Type: Burglary II (x2), Theft II, Theft III, Criminal Mischief III.

Text: On 11/14/08, Alaska State Troopers in Kotzebue responded to the
village of Noorvik to investigate a reported Burglary in the village.
Investigation revealed that several suspects had broken into the Water
and Sewer plant and stole several hand tools valued at approximately
$60.00. The suspects then went to the IRA building in Noorvik and used
the tools to break in and steal a medium sized fire safe from the
building (Approximate value of the safe is $600.00). The safe was then
transported to another location and forced open, causing the safe to be
destroyed. Suspects have been identified in the case. Investigation is
continuing.

Type: Burglary II, Theft III, Criminal Mischief IV.

Text: On 11/14/08, Alaska State Troopers in Kotzebue responded to the
village of Noorvik to investigate a reported Burglary in the village.
Investigation revealed that several suspects had broken into the Noorvik
Public School on 11/9/08 and had stolen numerous food items valued at
approximately $250.00. During the burglary, the suspects caused
approximately $250.00 in damage to an interior door of the school.
Suspects have been identified in the case. Investigation is continuing.

Text: On 11/15/08, at approximately 1445 hours, Robert Teeluk, 44 of
Kotlik was arrested on an outstanding warrant for three counts of Sexual
Abuse of a Minor in the second degree. Teeluk was transported and
remanded to YKCC in Bethel. Bail is set at $10,000.00

Text: On 11/16/08 at 1430 hours, Alaska State Troopers in Kotzebue
contacted Tommie Tebbits Jr., 18 yoa, of Noorvik at the Kotzebue
airport. Investigation revealed that Tebbits had an outstanding arrest
warrant for failure to appear at arraignment on the original charges of
Misconduct Involving a Controlled Substance VI and Minor Consuming
Alcohol. Tebbits was placed under arrest and remanded into the custody
of the Kotzebue Regional Jail facility with a bail set at $250.00.

Case number: 08-94720

Type: Domestic Violence Assault in the Fourth Degree

Text: On 11-15-08 at approximately 0020 hours, Alaska State Troopers
received a report of a domestic violence assault in Newhalen that had
occurred on 11-12-08. The Newhalen VPSO and Alaska State Troopers
investigated the incident and found that a 50 year old male and a 51
year old male had gotten into an argument at a residence in Newhalen on
the night of 11-12-08. The District Attorney was contacted and the case
will be referred to the DAO's office in Dillingham. Alcohol was not a
factor in this case.

Synopsis: On 11/16/08 at approximately 1700 hours, the Alaska State
Troopers initiated an investigation into a report that Henry Spein, 32
yoa, of Kwethluk physically assaulted his wife, a 29 year old female of
Kwethluk back in August. Investigation is ongoing.

Type: Assault in the Second Degree

Synopsis: On 11-15-08 at approximately 0600 hours, a VPSO in Napakiak
arrested William David Ray Simon, 19 yoa, of Napakiak after he
physically assaulted his girlfriend an 18 year old female of Napakiak
and their 9 month old son. The Alaska State Troopers are investigating.
Alcohol is a factor in this case.

Location: Mallard Way, Kodiak

Case Number: 08-94256

Type: Criminal Mischief / Domestic Violence

Text: On 11-13-08 at approximately 2138 hours AST Kodiak responded to a
residence on Mallard Way after a 37 year old female resident of Kodiak
called and reported her 15 year old son was out control and tearing up
the house. Investigation revealed that the 15 year old punched the
refrigerator denting it, knocked over furniture, and punched a large
hole in a wall. The damage is estimated at $450.00. The 15 year old is
charged with Criminal Mischief 4th Degree. Criminal Mischief 4th Degree
is a Class A Misdemeanor and due to the relationship of the victim and
suspect it is a crime of domestic violence.

Location: Chalkyitsik

Case number: 08-

Type: Kidnapping, Assault 3

Text: On 11/17/08 at 0200 hrs. Alaska State Troopers responded to
Chalkyitsik to investigate an assault and kidnapping involving firearm.
At approximately 2250 hrs on 11/16/08 a man called AST and reported that
Jason R. Nathaniel, 28 yoa of Chalkyitsik, threatened to assault him
outside his house. Nathaniel departed and returned a short time later
and pointed a rifle at him. AST received a second report at
approximately 2330 hours that Nathaniel went into a house with a rifle
and threatened to kill two other men in the house. Nathaniel then
kidnapped one of the men at gunpoint and marched him outside the
residence with the intent to kill him and then commit suicide. Once
outside the residence Nathaniel fired his rifle into the air. The
victim turned and wrestled the gun away from Nathaniel and fled the area
with the gun. AST arrested Nathaniel for Kidnapping, and three counts
of Assault in the 3rd Degree and transported him to Fairbanks
Correctional Center.

Text: On 11-15-2008, Matthew J. Riley, 24 YOA from Kenai, was issued a
citation by the Soldotna Wildlife Troopers for making a false statement
on a 2008 AK resident sport fish license. Bail was set at $310.

Type: Fail to possess deer harvest tickets

Text: On 11/16/08, Alaska Wildlife Troopers contacted Francisco Velasco,
age 30, of Juneau while he was deer hunting on Douglas Island. A check
of Velasco's hunting license revealed he did not have deer harvest
tickets in possession. Velasco was issued a citation for deer hunting
without harvest tickets. The bail was set at $160 with an optional
appearance in Juneau District Court.

Case Number: 08-94857

Type: DUI

Text: On 11/16/08, Debra L. Johnson 53 YOA of Cordova AK was arrested by
the Alaska Wildlife Troopers for Driving Under the Influence. At 0121
hrs AWT Cordova post received a call that JOHNSON was intoxicated and
had high centered her two wheel drive vehicle on snow at approximately
25.2 mile of the Copper River Highway. Regular State DOT plowing ends at
25.5 mile. JOHNSON was arrested after she was found hiding in the trees
just off the highway two miles from the scene. Arraignment was held
telephonically with the Valdez District Court. JOHNSON's bail was set at
$500.
