Talk Dirt To Me

Do you love to make mud pies, grow a houseplant, eat veggies, or stop to smell the bouquet on your co-workers desk? Everyone enjoys a bit of green growing around him or her and then there are those that are passionate and needy when it comes to dabbling in the dirt. With this blog, we'll try to satisfy those needs and tell you about what's going on with the Anchorage gardening scene. You know, as I finally learned, it's all about the dirt.

Photographer and gardener Fran Durner (fdurner@adn.com) writes the blog.

Lori Zaumseil of AKCANWIN writes that if you haven't been able to physically attend the monthly CANWIN meetings, you may now do so with a dial-in option. Call or email Lori at 245-2373 or AKCANWIN@Aol.com for info on how to do this. Lori also says, "I could really use a volunteer to take 'real minutes' for the meetings....anyone? Also, I need suggestions... I am a little frustrated that we still seem to be spinning in place......what can we do in terms of real action? We have talked about the need to develop a plan for approaching the commercial greenhouse/nursery/landscape industry.....developing a platform/position for the CWMA, among others. I need your help!" The next meeting is on Thursday, 11/13, 3:30 at BLM field office.

Linda Lockhart of Big Lake garden fame writes: "John and I will be providing tastings of six of my herb and fruit liqueurs as well as demonstrating the making of two new flavors at a fundraiser for the Alaska Wildbird Rehabilitation Center in Wasilla on Saturday, November 15, from 6pm till 10pm at the Mat-Su Resort. We have donated an additional 6 bottles of liqueurs for this event. Three will be available to bid on at the silent portion of the auction and another 3 during the live auction."

Ellen Vande Visse writes from Michigan where she has been holed up writing a book, that she has found a publisher! "My book is entitled Ask Mother Nature. It’s a collection of stories about co-creating gardens by working with the consciousness of nature. It’s due out in the spring of 2009." She says she will be offering a workshop based on her book next year. You can email her at ellen@goodearthgardenschool.com if you are interested. Details will be posted on the blog when they are available. Ellen also says she will be back in Alaska to teach the Organic Gardening class at Mat-Su College from mid-Feb through March, 2009. You can get registration information now for the class, Agri 138, Organic Gardening, by calling (907)745-9746.

Now might be a good time to look ahead and start planning trips to garden shows and meetings Outside next year. The 2009 Northwest Flower & Garden Show will take place February 18-22 at the Washington State Convention and Trade Center in downtown Seattle. The North American Rock Garden Society Western Winter Study Weekend, "Revitalizing the Rock Garden" is March 13-15, 2009 in Portland, Oregon.

Hmmm, road trip anyone?
