Fiskars® Encourages Community Gardening

Over the past six years Project Orange Thumb grants have provided community gardening groups with the tools to help create gardens that provide food to their local shelves, horticultural education to young gardeners, a place of peace, a place of beauty and most importantly it provides to the gardeners and their communities a sense of achievement and pride.

These are just some examples of how communities benefit and how hundreds of lives are enriched with funds from Fiskars® Project Orange Thumb. Started in 2003, the project has awarded more than 100 community groups with over $300,000 for their gardens.

This year, the program has really blossomed! The number of grants has almost doubled, and—for the first time—grants are also available in Canada, Australia and New Zealand! Beginning November 3rd, community groups, schools, churches and other community focused organizations can apply online for the 2009 crop of grants.

Twenty grant recipients within the U. S. and Canada and four within Australia and New Zealand will receive up to $2,300 in tools and gardening-related materials. The application deadline is February 17, 2009; recipients will be notified of their grant by March 25, 2009.

Grant recipients from past years have illustrated the many possibilities that these projects explore. They include a community rain garden, rejuvenating a community park, an arts center's use of flowers as a source of inspiration and a church-group garden that serves as a sanctuary for contemplation in a troubled community.
