This is a new blog dedicated to the general topic of crime and crime prevention in Alaska. We are starting by posting the Alaska State Troopers' daily logs, our own crime-related stories and other relevant items as we come across them. The Daily News encourages community engagement and discussion of issues of crime and criminal justice. Comments are not edited and will be posted immediately. Troopers investigating the shooting death of a 10-year-old boy in Diomede now say it appears the child was accidentally shot by his 13-year-old cousin. The dispatch is below.

Case Number: 08-89014

Type: Criminal Trespass I and Criminal Mischief V

Text: On 11-4-08, Danelle "Sugar" Starr, age 21 of Juneau was charged
with one count of Criminal Trespass in the First Degree and one count of
Criminal Mischief in the Fifth degree. The charges were the result of an
investigation that took place in Angoon regarding the unlawful entry
into a residence and the theft of an automobile. Starr was given an
arraignment date of 11-20-08 in the Angoon District court.

Location: Wasilla

Case number: 08-91568

Type: Burglary I, Theft II

Text: On 11-03-2008 at approximately 1855 hours, Alaska State Troopers
responded to a residence located off of Hyer Rd, near Wasilla, for a
report of a burglary. Investigation revealed that entry into the
residence was made through a garage side door. Approximately $2,000
worth of musical instruments was taken from the residence.
Investigation of this case continues. Anyone with information regarding
this case is encouraged to contact the Alaska State Troopers at

Location: Wasilla
Case number: 08-91623
Type: Motor Vehicle Collision
Text: On 11-4-08 at approximately 0246 hours Alaska State Troopers
received the report of a single vehicle collision on Sitze Road near
Megans Circle, near Wasilla. Investigation revealed that Victor Smith,
age 25 of Soldotna, had lost control of his red 2008 GMC Sierra on an
icy corner, slid off the road, and collided with a tree. Smith reported
wearing his seatbelt and did not report any injuries.

Type: Warrant Arrest

Text: On 11/03/2008 at approximately 1524 hours, Alaska State Troopers
arrested Nancy Murphy, age 39, of Wasilla. Murphy was known to have an
outstanding arrest warrant for failure to appear with an original charge
of Driving With a Suspended License. Murphy was located at her
residence off of Mulchatna Road in Wasilla. Murphy was arrested and
transported to Mat-Su Pre-Trial where she was held on $500.00 bail.

Location: Little Diomede

Case number: 08-89205

Type: Death Investigation

Text: On 10/26/08, at about 0053 hours, Nome AST received a report of a
death in Little Diomede. Investigation revealed on 10/26/08 at about
0015 hours, a 10 year boy, Jeremy Ozenna, was fatally shot at a
residence in Little Diomede when his 13 year old cousin was showing him
how to manipulate a rifle. Next of kin were notified. The State
Medical Examiner was notified and requested the remains to be
transported to Anchorage for examination. No foul play is suspected.
Alcohol and drugs were not a factor in the incident.

Case number: 08-90931

Type: Probation Violation, Resisting Arrest.

Text: On 11-1-08 at 0330 hours, the Alaska State Troopers received a
report of an intoxicated person in Gambell. Subsequent investigation
led to the arrest of Douglas Henry, 30 of Gambell, for Probation
Violation and Resisting Arrest. Henry was remanded to the Anvil
Mountain Correctional Center.

Type: Assault 3- DV (2) counts

Text: On Monday, 11-3-08, at about 2045, Alaska State Troopers responded
to an Antone Way residence for a report of intoxicated 42 YOA Daniel
Robert Leithead of Kodiak threatening family members with a knife.
Leithead was subsequently arrested on (2) counts of Assault 3-DV and
remanded at the Kodiak Jail without incident.

Type: DUI, Resisting Arrest, Assault 4 (police officer).

Text: On 11-1-08 at 0330 hours, the Alaska State Troopers received a
report of an intoxicated person in Gambell. Subsequent investigation
led to the arrest of Ben Koonooka, 54 of Gambell, for Driving Under the
Influence, Resisting Arrest, and Assault IV on a police officer.
Koonooka was remanded to the Anvil Mountain Correctional Center.

Type: MCA, DUI, Reckless Endangerment x 2, Probation Violation.

Text: On 11-1-08 at 0230 hours, the Alaska State Troopers received a
report of an intoxicated person operating a four wheeler in Gambell.
Subsequent investigation led to the arrest of McCormick Tungiyan, 20 of
Gambell. Tungiyan is charged with Habitual Minor Consuming Alcohol,
Driving Under the Influence, two counts of Reckless Endangerment, and
Probation Violation. Tungiyan was remanded to the Anvil Mountain
Correctional Center.

Type: Bench Warrant

Text: On 11/4/08 at approximately 1030 hours, David Small, 42 YOA of
Quinhagak, was arrested on an outstanding bench warrant for Failure to
Remand by Deadline by the Quinhagak Public Safety Department. Small was
transported to the Yukon-Kuskokwim Correctional Center, Bethel, where he
was remanded without bail to serve the balance of his sentence.

Type: MVC/ Fail to immediately report an accident
Text: On 10/30/08 at approximately 1030 hours, Alexis Chichenoff, 71
years old from Kodiak, reported to Kodiak Alaska State Troopers that on
10/29/08 at approximately 1030 hours as he was driving out bound on
Monashka Bay Road, he drove across some black ice and lost control of
his vehicle striking a guard rail. Both he and his passenger were seat
belted in and there were no injuries. Damage was estimated at almost
16,000.00. Chichenoff was issued a citation for failure to immediately
report an accident.

Type: Violation of Terms and Conditions of Release, Violation of a
Domestic Violence Restraining Order, and Warrant Arrest

Text: On Tuesday, 10-28-2008, at approximately 1010 hours, the Old
Harbor VPSO received a report that Albert M. Peterson of Old Harbor had
violated the terms of his conditions of release and had violated a
domestic violence restraining order (DVRO) by having indirect
communications with the petitioner of the DVRO. After investigation, it
was determined that Albert Peterson violated his terms and conditions of
release and a DVRO, by having indirect communications with the
petitioner. Albert Peterson is charged with Violating Terms and
Conditions of Release and Violation of a DVRO. An arrest warrant was
requested and secured from the Kodiak court. On Monday 11/03/08 at about
1616 hours, Alaska State Troopers contacted 56 YOA Albert M. Peterson of
Old Harbor at a Mission Road business. Peterson was arrested on the
outstanding warrant; original charges Violating a Domestic Violence
Restraining Order and Violation of Condition of Release. Peterson was
remanded at the Kodiak Jail without bail.

Text: On 11/04/08 at 0024 hours AST investigated a report of domestic
assault. Andrew Thomas, 45, of North Pole, was arrested for 2 counts of
DV Assault IV and Resisting Arrest. Transported to FCC w/o incident.

Type: Vehicle Theft I

Text: On 11-4-08 at 0502 hours, the Alaska State Troopers received a
report from a residence on Chena Pump Road in Fairbanks that a white
2001 Ford Ranger with AK registration EXE928 had been stolen between
0000 and 0500. Investigation revealed two suspects walked in the area of
Eider Court, Waugstroe Drive, Duckhawk Drive, and Roland Road, before
finding the Ford Ranger unlocked. The Ranger is white with distinctive
double blue strips that run from the hood over the roof to the tailgate.
The investigation is continuing and anyone with information regarding
this theft is asked to call the Alaska State Troopers at 451-5100.

Case number: 91570
Type: Warrant Arrest
Text: On 11/3/08 at 1854 hours, Soldotna AST arrested Candace Lunn, age
39 of Soldotna, on two outstanding arrest warrants. Lunn was contacted
during an investigation into a disturbance. Lunn was taken into custody
without incident and remanded to Wildwood Pretrial Facility where she
was held in lieu of $200 bail. Both of the warrants were for contempt
of court.

Location: Kenai
Case number: 08-91582
Type: DUI, Refusal
Text: On 11/3/08 at approximately 1955 hours, AST received a report of a
male slumped over the handlebars of an ATV in a ditch near Kenai. AST
contacted the male, later identified as Dennis Bartlett. Bartlett was
subsequently arrested for DUI and transported to Wild Wood Pre-trial.
While at Wild Wood pretrial, Bartlett also refused to submit to a
chemical test of his breath. Bartlett was charged with DUI and Refusal.
No bail was set on Bartlett due to previous related convictions.

Type: Alcohol Importation- Felony
Text: On 11/3/08 Nome ABADE acting on a tip contacted April James, age
45, of Gambell, AK at a local air carrier in Nome, AK. Incident to
contact, 4-1liter, 2-750ml bottles of alcohol and 3-12 oz cans of beer
were seized from her person and luggage. Eight pounds of yeast was also
seized. Charges will be forwarded to OSPA.
